Matter and form have been fundamental principles in natural science since Greek Antiquity and their apparent rejection during the seventeenth century typically has been described as a precursor to the emergence of modern science. This volume reconsiders the fate of these principles and the complex history of their reception. By analyzing work being done in physics, chemistry, theology, physiology, psychology, and metaphysics, and by considering questions about change, identity, and causation, the contributors show precisely how matter and form entered into early modern science and philosophy. The result is our best picture to date of the diverse reception of matter and form among the innovators of the early modern period.

A noteworthy study in the history of ideas, this is the first systematic account of an idea that was born with the concept of science itself in ancient Greece and that has been vital to its evolution ever since. The book traces the development of the concept of form—one of the most important and persistent elements in natural philosophy—from its origins in Plato and Aristotle to the beginnings of the nineteenth century. Norma Emerton depicts the transformation of the form concept as it was transferred from a philosophical to a scientific context, and she explains how it was reinterpreted and used especially in particle theory, chemical doctrine, and crystallography in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. Throughout she emphasizes the philosophical, linguistic, and theological context of scientific theories, supporting her argument with evidence from a wide variety of primary sources, some of them little known, and many of them specially translated by the author. In form and style her book treats the history of a "unit-idea " in the grand tradition of A. 0. Lovejoy's Great Chain of Being. ''The story is a fascinating one,'' writes L. Pearce Williams in the Foreword. "This is 'internal' history of science which illustrates well the fact that scientific ideas have lives of their own worth investigating, describing, and analyzing. The result is a history that introduces one of the most important and central concerns of modern science." The Scientific Reinterpretation of Form will be of particular interest to historians and philosophers of science, intellectual historians, and others concerned with the dynamic interaction between philosophy, theology, and science.

Matter and Form explores the relationship between natural science and political philosophy from the classical to contemporary eras, taking an interdisciplinary approach to the philosophic understanding of the structure and process of the natural world and its impact on the history of political philosophy. It illuminates the importance of philosophic reflection on material nature to moral and political theorizing, mediating between the sciences and humanities and making a contribution to ending the isolation between them.

Science And Faith Within Reason written by Dr Jaume Navarro and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-28 with Religion categories.

Scientists, historians, philosophers and theologians often engage in debates on the limitations and mutual interactions of their respective fields of study. Serious discussions are often overshadowed by the mass-produced popular and semi-popular literature on science and religion, as well as by the political agendas of many of the actors in these debates. For some, reducing religion and science to forms of social discourse is a possible way out from epistemological overlapping between them; yet is there room for religious faith only when science dissolves into one form of social discourse? The religion thus rescued would have neither rational legitimisation nor metaphysical validity, but if both scientific and religious theories try to make absolute claims on all possible aspects of reality then conflict between them seems almost inevitable. In this book leading authors in the field of science and religion, including William Carroll, Steve Fuller, Karl Giberson and Roger Trigg, highlight the oft-neglected and profound philosophical foundations that underlie some of the most frequent questions at the boundary between science and religion: the reality of knowledge, and the notions of creation, life and design. In tune with Mariano Artigas’s work, the authors emphasise that these are neither religious nor scientific but serious philosophical questions.

Sir D'Arcy W. Thompson CB FRS FRSE (1860-1948) was a Scottish biologist, mathematician, and classics scholar. A pioneering mathematical biologist, he is mainly remembered as the author of ON GROWTH AND FORM, an influential work of striking originality and elegance. The central theme of ON GROWTH AND FORM is that biologists of its author's day overemphasized evolution as the fundamental determinant of the form and structure of living organisms, and under-emphasized the roles of physical laws and mechanics. Peter Medawar who was the 1960 Nobel Laureate in Medicine called ON GROWTH AND FORM "the finest work of literature in all the annals of science that have been recorded in the English tongue."
