In the last few years there has been an excltmg upsurge in seabird research. There are several reasons for this. Man's increased ex ploitation of natural resources has led to a greater awareness of the potential conflicts with seabirds, and of the use of seabirds to indicate the damage we might be doing to our environment. Many seabird populations have increased dramatically in numbers and so seem more likely to conflict with man, for example through competition for food or transmission of diseases. Oil exploration and production has resulted in major studies of seabird distributions and ecology in relation to oil pollution. The possibility that seabirds may provide information on fish stock biology is now being critically investigated. Some seabird species have suffered serious declines in numbers and require conservation action to be taken to reduce the chances that they will become extinct. This requires an understanding of the factors determining their population size and dynamics.

Seabirds are considered strong bioindicators of marine health and changes in seabird ecology can reflect issues in the surrounding marine environment. In this thesis, seabird ecology was examined at several scales to see if seabirds could indicate changes in the marine ecosystem. In Chapter 1, rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) chick diets were used to detect changes in prey availability among and within years. Changes in diet within years was likely due to prey life-history traits, while changes among years were reflective of changes in the surrounding marine environment. Chapter 2 compared the population trends of seabirds on Middleton Island to colonies in the Gulf of Alaska for evidence of population synchrony. Seabird populations declined across the Gulf of Alaska, potentially due to the 1977 warm water regime shift. However, populations of select seabirds on Middleton Island contrasted their species' large-scale population trends, suggesting that local factors played important roles in the population trends of these seabirds. These results demonstrate how seabirds can indicate large changes in their environment (population declines), but how using individual colonies, such as Middleton Island, may not detect these large changes in the marine environment due to local influence. Together these chapters demonstrate the value of seabirds as bioindicators and their ability of to detect changes in the marine environment at varying scales. The result of this thesis strengthens our knowledge of seabird biology and ecology, and their ability to be bioindicators of marine environments.

The maJonty of the chapters in this volume are structured to include a balance between literature review, original data, and synthesis. The research approaches taken by the authors are generallyof two kinds. One centers on the long-term, in-depth study of a single species in which many aspects of its natural history are examined in detail. The other is a comparative one which involves investigating particular questions by examining species or by comparing groups of species that may include taxonomic andjor ecological affinities. Most of the chapters concern obvious aspects of breeding behavior including habitat selection, the effects of age on breeding, communication, mating systems, synchrony of breeding activities, development of behavior, prefledging parental care, and postfledging parental care. Since man's encroachment on the seashore and continental shelf poses certain threats to marine birds, a volume elucidating various aspects of their biology has multiple uses. "Seabird Energetics" is a composite volume with a coherent theme. It makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of the costs of breeding, the significance of which goes far beyond physiology as a brief historical perspective may illustrate. After decades of mainly anecdotal observations by natu ralists with an interest in seabirds, there was still so little information that in 1954, David Lack in his book "The Natural Regulatiori of Animal Numbers" was forced to ignore seabirds in a way that would be unthinkable today. The late fifties, however, produced a seminal contribution to seabird ecology and behaviour in the series of papers which stemmed from the Centenary Expedi tion of the British Ornithologists' Union to Ascension Island. Not only had quantitative ecology become the norm but the interest aroused by the European Ethological approach to bird behaviour had led to properly descriptive and analytical studies of seabird behaviour. The complex interactions between social behaviour and ecology then received more attention and the sixties and seventies brought a flood of papers on ecology and on some social aspects of breeding ecology. V.C. Wynne-Edwards linked these two as part of his attempt to understand the mechanism of the regulation of animal populations in his book "Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour" (1962). He paid considerable attention to seabirds and the phenomena of clutch and brood-size, deferred breeding, "rest" years, etc., although, unfortunately, the most relevant studies were yet to come.

Seabirds live in extreme environments. After fledging, they spend the majority of their lives foraging on the vast ocean landscape, coming to shore only to breed. Most seabirds also exhibit strong pairbonding, monogamy, and philopatry. These behavioural and ecological traits make them fascinating subjects for sensory ecology research. Sensory perception is integral in all aspects of seabird biology, including sexual selection, evolution, and ecology. Seabirds are also one of the most at-risk groups of birds in the world due to threats faced both at sea and on sensitive breeding colonies, and sensory-based management efforts offer a powerful new approach for conservation. Firstly, this thesis examines the use of seabird sensory ecology from an applied conservation perspective. A comprehensive review of the uses of sensory –based techniques highlights the importance of this field for the conservation of seabirds indicates how these methods could be applied to other taxa with similar life histories and behaviours (Chapter 1 in press, Biological Reviews). Experiments testing the use of sensory stimuli for the attraction of grey-faced petrels (Pterodroma gouldi) to restored habitat (Chapter 2) indicate that not all sensory modes, or acoustic stimuli, are equally effective. Playback of attractive calls and supernormal acoustic signals were more effectiv than aggressive calls. Naturally scented nest material neither attracted nor deterred birds from nest boxes. Secondly, I examine the sensory ecology of seabirds from a theoretical perspective. Procellariiform seabirds such as petrels, shearwaters, storm petrels and albatross, are a more basal avian lineage and have some sensory traits that reflect their phylogeny (e.g. large olfactory bulb ratios), and have been thought to lack the ability to learn complex communication that is exhibited in songbirds (Oscines). Investigations into grey-faced petrel vocalizations revealed previously unknown complexities of their call repertoires (Chapter 3) and experimental manipulations indicate the first ever evidence of vocal matching in a seabird species (Chapter 4). Finally, this thesis examines olfactory communication and offers the first demonstration of a phylogenetic basis of odour in birds. Odour composition was linked to species and phylogenetic relatedness, for six species of seabirds from two orders (five Procellariiformes and one Sphenisciformes- penguins). By using a holistic approach, this thesis shows the centrality of sensory ecology in seabird biology, the complexity of seabird sensory adaptations, and how these can be harnessed in conservation.
