This fascinating book includes classic articles on the show by Geoffrey O'Brien and Bill Wyman (first published in the New York Review of Books and Salon.com respectively), and a selection of new and revised essays by some of the top television scholars in the US - looking at issues as wide-ranging as Seinfeld's Jewishness, alleged nihilism, food obsession, and long-running syndication. The book also includes a comprehensive episode guide, and Betty Lee's lexicon of Seinfeld language.

"A show about nothing." This succinctly encapsulates Seinfeld's essence. Seinfeld, a timeless prime time classic, expertly encapsulated the very essence of '90s society and provided a glimpse into stand-up comedian life. A group of close friends, Jerry Seinfeld, George Costanza Cosmo Kramer, and Elaine Benes, live in the exciting city of New York and engage in a series of comedic adventures that frequently push the boundaries of credibility. They go on a series of delightfully bizarre life adventures, sometimes teetering on the verge of absolute lunacy. The show had a unique quality that made it special, though. Astutely scrutinizing food as a pervasive subject, it explores the more enjoyable aspects of regular living. Episodes that revolved around gastronomy were christened with the name of the featured dish, thus elevating food to the status of an episode's focal point. Certainly, all ardent Seinfeld enthusiasts must have been beguiled by the delectable dishes revealed in the show, nurturing a fervent desire to experience them firsthand. To facilitate your culinary journey and enable you to host the ultimate Seinfeld-themed gathering, we present to you 30 recipes plucked directly from the show's gastronomic repertoire. Savor and enjoy each and every second.

The Un Americans written by Joseph Litvak and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-25 with Literary Criticism categories.

In a bold rethinking of the Hollywood blacklist and McCarthyite America, Joseph Litvak reveals a political regime that did not end with the 1950s or even with the Cold War: a regime of compulsory sycophancy, in which the good citizen is an informer, ready to denounce anyone who will not play the part of the earnest, patriotic American. While many scholars have noted the anti-Semitism underlying the House Un-American Activities Committee’s (HUAC’s) anti-Communism, Litvak draws on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Alain Badiou, and Max Horkheimer to show how the committee conflated Jewishness with what he calls “comic cosmopolitanism,” an intolerably seductive happiness, centered in Hollywood and New York, in show business and intellectual circles. He maintains that HUAC took the comic irreverence of the “uncooperative” witnesses as a crime against an American identity based on self-repudiation and the willingness to “name names.” Litvak proposes that sycophancy was (and continues to be) the price exacted for assimilation into mainstream American culture, not just for Jews, but also for homosexuals, immigrants, and other groups deemed threatening to American rectitude. Litvak traces the outlines of comic cosmopolitanism in a series of performances in film and theater and before HUAC, performances by Jewish artists and intellectuals such as Zero Mostel, Judy Holliday, and Abraham Polonsky. At the same time, through an uncompromising analysis of work by informers including Jerome Robbins, Elia Kazan, and Budd Schulberg, he explains the triumph of a stoolpigeon culture that still thrives in the America of the early twenty-first century.

In a promotional video for the eighth season of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David appears as Godzilla, walking through the streets of New York City, terrorizing everyone who sees him. People scream and run for their lives. Larry, meanwhile, has a quizzical look on his face and asks, “What, are you people nuts?” What makes Larry a monster, and why doesn’t he know that he’s a monster? Curb Your Enthusiasm and Philosophy discusses several answers to these questions. This book revolves around Curb-Larry, the character that the real Larry David plays on HBO’s popular television series: his outlook on life, his unusual ways of interacting with people, his inability or unwillingness to conform to the world. Many of the chapters discuss ethical and existential issues, such as whether Larry is a “bad apple.” Larry doesn’t ask questions about free will, or wonder whether the world outside our minds really exists because he’s more like Socrates than Descartes. He tells bitter truths about how we live our lives. There's something heroic about Larry's independence from social conventions, and something tragic about his tendency to hurt people with his frankness. It's hard not to ask, should we curb our enthusiasm?
