“His work is truly revolutionary. He has taken the most important of existential experiences and made them transparent for self-growth and research.” —Linda Berg-Cross, PhD, ABPP, Professor of Psychology, Howard University The main purpose of this research-based, self-help book is to introduce the goal-and-causal theory of “Psychological Time,” and to help you calculate your “Psychological Age”—that is, how old you feel, based on significant events in your life. You can also learn how to lower your psychological age (feel younger), using past experiences to move into the future, rejuvenating the mind for more satisfying personal growth, productivity, and happiness. We humans created the convention of Time—hours, days, millennia. But we also created “Psychological Time,” which we can compress (to survive an interminable wait, for example), or expand (to luxuriate in pleasure). So fully-integrated into our brain is this “Psychological Time” that, as part of the illusion, we can lose touch with “real” chronological time altogether, and even change the sequence of past events to contradict or override our otherwise communal understanding of the world. In this book, you will generate “Causograms,” a kind of map that graphically represents your perception of the cause-and-effect and goal-based connections that your mind naturally makes between life experiences. These include, but are not limited to achievements, memories triggered by new experiences, and expectations based on prior accomplishments. This process allows you to re-examine the relation between life events, goals and personal interactions, then compare your resulting “Psychological Age” to your chronological age. “What a wonderful approach to the human life cycle. I am enjoying it immensely.” —H. Keith H. Brodie, MD, James B. Duke Professor of Psychiatry, President Emeritus, Duke University

Friending The Past written by Alan Liu and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-27 with Social Science categories.

Can today’s society, increasingly captivated by a constant flow of information, share a sense of history? How did our media-making forebears balance the tension between the present and the absent, the individual and the collective, the static and the dynamic—and how do our current digital networks disrupt these same balances? Can our social media, with its fleeting nature, even be considered social at all? In Friending the Past, Alan Liu proposes fresh answers to these innovative questions of connection. He explores how we can learn from the relationship between past societies whose media forms fostered a communal and self-aware sense of history—such as prehistorical oral societies with robust storytelling cultures, or the great print works of nineteenth-century historicism—and our own instantaneous present. He concludes with a surprising look at how the sense of history exemplified in today’s JavaScript timelines compares to the temporality found in Romantic poetry. Interlaced among these inquiries, Liu shows how extensive “network archaeologies” can be constructed as novel ways of thinking about our affiliations with time and with each other. These conceptual architectures of period and age are also always media structures, scaffolded with the outlines of what we mean by history. Thinking about our own time, Liu wonders if the digital, networked future can sustain a similar sense of history.

Lighter As We Go written by Mindy Greenstein and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-26 with Psychology categories.

The fears of aging have been one long cascading domino effect through the years: twenty year-olds dread thirty; forty year-olds fear fifty; sixty fears seventy, and so it goes. And there is something to worry about, though it isn't what you'd expect: research shows that having a bad attitude toward aging when we're young is associated with poorer health when we're older. These worries tend to peak in midlife; but in Lighter as We Go, Mindy Greenstein and Jimmie Holland show us that, contrary to common wisdom, our sense of well-being actually increases with our age--often even in the presence of illness or disability. For the first time, Greenstein and Holland--on a joint venture between an 85 year-old and a fifty year-old--explore positive psychology concepts of character strengths and virtues to unveil how and why, through the course of a lifetime, we learn who we are as we go. Drawing from the authors' own personal, intergenerational friendship, as well as a broad array of research from many different areas--including social psychology, anthropology, neuroscience, humanities, psychiatry, and gerontology--Lighter as We Go introduces compassion, justice, community, and culture to help calm our cascading fears of aging.

The Promise Of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-26 with Social Science categories.

Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Time rules our lives, but how much do we really understand it? In Time Warped, we meet the people willing to go to extreme lengths to find out. They travel to Costa Rica to find out if hummingbirds can sense the passage of time, they walk towards the edge of a stairwell blindfolded and one man spends two months in an ice cave in total darkness - all in an attempt to fathom the tricks time can play on our minds. Drawing on the latest research from psychology, neuroscience and biology, award-winning BBC Radio4 presenter Claudia Hammond delves into the mysteries of time perception. She shows us how to manage time more efficiently, why speeds up as you get older and, ultimately, how to use the warping of time to our own advantage.
