Este livro foi resultado de um trabalho de pesquisa no Mestrado Profissional dedicado aos estudos da Biodiversidade em Unidades de Conservação, na Escola Nacional de Botânica Tropical do Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro, em cooperação com o Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos-Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade. A área de estudo possui 20.024 hectares em terras protegidas, localizada entre os municípios de Teresópolis, Petrópolis, Magé e Guapimirim. As formações rochosas da serra dos Órgãos têm sua origem em épocas geológicas muito antigas, com altitudes que variam entre 80 a 2.263m na Pedra do Sino, ponto culminante do Parque, suas montanhas são parte da região central fluminense mais alta da Serra do Mar. Os acervos que nos auxiliaram na busca documental e iconográfica ampliada foram: Biblioteca Barbosa Rodrigues do Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro, Arquivo Nacional, Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Brasil, Biblioteca Nacional, Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação da Fundação Getúlio Vargas, arquivos e bibliotecas das sedes do Parnaso (Teresópolis, Guapimirim e Petrópolis), Museu Imperial de Petrópolis, Jornal O Diário de Teresópolis, Casa da Memória Arthur Dalmasso, Bibliothèque du Muséum d ́Histoire Naturelle et Jardin des Plantes, Bibliothèque National de France, Chicago Public Library, entre outros motores de busca que nos proporcionaram o acesso aos instrumentos analíticos, contribuindo para o sucesso da pesquisa.
