Sex and the Citizen is a multidisciplinary collection of essays that draws on current anxieties about "legitimate" sexual identities and practices across the Caribbean to explore both the impact of globalization and the legacy of the region's history of sexual exploitation during colonialism, slavery, and indentureship. Speaking from within but also challenging the assumptions of feminism, literary and cultural studies, and queer studies, this volume questions prevailing oppositions between the backward, homophobic nation-state and the laid-back, service-with-a-smile paradise or between giving in ignominiously to the autocratic demands of the global north and equating postcolonial sovereignty with a "wholesome" heterosexual citizenry. The contributors use parliamentary legislation, novels, film, and other texts to examine Martinique's relationship to France; the diasporic relationships between the Dominican Republic and New York City, between India and Trinidad, and between Mexico's capital city and its Caribbean coast; "indigenous" names for sexual practices and desires in Suriname and the Eastern Caribbean; and other topics. This volume will appeal to readers interested in how sex has become an important register for considerations of citizenship, personal and political autonomy, and identity in the Caribbean and the global south. This book focuses upon two themes: the definition of 'family' and the impact of the expansion of the concept of 'family' in law: and family fights over wills and estates - what recourse family members may have in challenging an estate. The first part, `The challenge of the "new family" for Law', considers the challenge both in the inter vivos and the postmortem contexts in the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. A particular focus is upon the dramatic expansion of the definition of family from the traditional nuclear family consisting of a husband, wife and their mutual children to a definition that includes unmarried heterosexual and same sex couples living together and, in some jurisdictions to new kinds of companionate partnerships that are not based on a sexual relationship. In some jurisdictions such developments are simply an expression of sharing responsibility by allocating it in the private domain, as opposed to the public potentially through social welfare; in others, particularly in the United States, it is a defence of fundamental institutions and, with it, a defence of society itself. The second part, 'Family fights over wills and estates', examines the law in Australia, Switzerland, France, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Its comparison of civil and common law approaches shows how the law expresses the same principle objects - protection of family and obligations towards key family members - but does so from entirely different perspectives; and where the common law which enshrined the notion of testamentary freedom is being qualified through the expanding domain of family provision legislation, the civil law which is based on codified shares and allocated responsibilities expressed through proportionate entitlements in estates, is being qualified through a range of disqualifying and varying mechanisms.

This book uses real-world examples from the aquaculture industry to demonstrate how deep technology is assisting farmers and vulnerable communities. Works conducted by Poseidon-AI (a deep tech company involved in the aquaculture sector) in different countries are presented as case studies to show the positive impacts of deep tech involvement in the aquaculture sector. Primary industries, such as fisheries and aquaculture, rely heavily on labor. Furthermore, the manual practices of these farming methods increase material waste and reduce yields, resulting in higher costs and lower revenues. Poikilotherms make up the majority of aquatic animals, and environmental changes have a significant impact on them. This means that, due to climate change, farming of these animals cannot continue in the same way that it has for centuries. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, image processing, sensing, and automation are approaches that can assist these farms in dealing with rapid environmental changes while also assisting farmers in growing their businesses sustainably. This book is of interest to climate change scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, civil workers, and policymakers. Furthermore, the book is a great complimentary material for graduate students of fisheries, aquaculture, ecology, soil science, water management and environmental sciences. All national and international policymakers working in implementation of UNSDGs and sustainability, will find this book a useful read.
