This book presents a simple analytical method based on the extended rod theory that allows the earthquake resistance of high-rise buildings to be easily and accurately evaluated at the preliminary design stage. It also includes practical software for applying the extended rod theory to the dynamic analysis of actual buildings and structures. High-rise buildings in large cities, built on soft ground consisting of sedimentary rock, tend to have low natural frequency. If ground motion due to an earthquake occurs at distant hypocenters, the vibration wave can be propagated through several sedimentary layers and act on skyscrapers as a long-period ground motion, potentially producing a resonance phenomenon that can cause severe damage. Accordingly, there is a pressing need to gauge the earthquake resistance of existing skyscrapers and to improve their seismic performance. This book was written by authors who have extensive experience in tall-building seismic design in Japan. The software included enables readers to perform dynamic calculations of skyscrapers’ resistance to vibrations. As such, it offers a valuable resource for practitioners and engineers, as well as students of civil engineering.

Response Spectrum Method In Seismic Analysis And Design Of Structures written by Ajaya Kumar Gupta and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-22 with Technology & Engineering categories.

New developments in the response spectrum method have led to calculations in seismic stresses that are more accurate, and usually lower, than those obtained by conventional methods. This new textbook examines the wealth of information on the response spectrum method generated by the latest research and presents the background theory in simplified form. Applications of these methods is essential in the seismic design of critical structures, such as nuclear power plants and petroleum facilities. In new construction, the reduced seismic stresses will result in efficient and economic design. For facilities already built, these more accurate methods can be used where the facility is being reassessed for higher loads and in the calculation of margins. Written by an acknowledged expert in this and related fields, this volume is ideal as a graduate text for courses in structural and earthquake engineering. It is also an excellent reference for civil, structural, mechanical, and earthquake engineers.

This technical report presents the study carried out within the Action 3 'Methodologies for assessing the combined effect of upgrading' of REEBUILD project, introducing a simplified integrated method for the assessment of the combined seismic and energy retrofit of existing buildings, along with their environmental performance, in a life-cycle perspective by achieving a global assessment result in economic terms. The development of a user-friendly method to assess the potential improvements achieved in a combined renovation project is essential to ease and speed up the knowledge of benefits that different stakeholders e.g. owners, industry, policy makers, etc., can gain by combining seismic safety and energy efficiency retrofit technologies, thus overcoming renovation barriers, such as intervention cost, execution time, inhabitants' relocation, institutional and administrative issues. A review of the existing methodologies for the seismic and energy retrofit assessment of existing buildings is first carried out, serving as a state-of-the-art for proposing the simplified combined assessment method. Specifically, two key-streams of available methods and tools are investigated: (i) sector-specific methods, focusing on methods and tools devoted to the independent assessment of either seismic or environmental/energy performance of buildings, and (ii) multi-performance methods, including sustainability assessment methods and tools, mainly focused on qualitative procedures (i.e. sustainability rating systems based on indicators of different weight), and integrated methodologies developed in the last years to provide a quantitative holistic life cycle-based assessment. Within the latter category of the analysed existing assessment methods, the Sustainable Structural Design (SDD) methodology, developed in the framework of the SAFESUST (SAFEty and SUSTainability) approach results particularly noteworthy. Hence, it is considered as point of reference to introduce a simplified combined assessment method, consisting of four main steps, namely (i) input information, (ii) selection of techniques, (iii) integrated retrofit design and evaluation, and (iv) optimised solutions. Finally, four case studies referring to EU representative residential and non-residential building typologies needing combined seismic and energy retrofit are identified in order to apply both the selected standard (i.e. SSD methodology) and the proposed simplified combined assessment method.

Seismic Evaluation Of Tall Building Structures Using Nonlinear Static Procedures written by Malik Atik and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with categories.

Non linear dynamic analysis constitutes the most powerful method for the assessment of the non linear seismic response of structures subjected to strong earthquake motions. Considering the complexity associated to time history analysis, the use of nonlinear static techniques, or pushover analysis constitutes an efficient and easy to use alternative to dynamic analysis. This thesis develops innovative static nonlinear method to assess the seismic behavior of high-rise buildings. It is composed of three parts:In the first part, the continuum model which constitutes a simple and efficient tool to analyze high-rise wall-frame buildings is revisited. The influence of calculation precision in specifying the optimum level of wall curtailment is discussed. The relationship between the curtailment level and the resulting internal forces is investigated. The second part proposes a new single-run adaptive pushover method for the seismic assessment of shear wall structures. This method has two main advantages: It is practical tool to integrate the effect of higher modes with full interaction between them and it overcomes the criticisms forwarded against the previous single-run adaptive pushover analyses. The proposed method is presented as well as its numerical implementation. The third part presents an innovative method to specifying the seismic peak response quantities of the tall structures. The principle of the single-run adaptive pushover procedures is integrated with the capacity spectrum method proposed by ATC-40 (1996). Where, this latter is limited for structures that vibrate primarily in the fundamental mode.
