Falling is among the most common causes of injury in adults, 40% of which are attributed to slipping. Previous efforts to understand slips have focused on straight walking, utilizing sliding platforms, treadmills, and slick floors. A wealth of knowledge has been gleaned from such studies, but they are limited by their artificial constraints compared to environmental slips. Also, slips that occur during turns have not been studied in depth, despite turning contributing up to 45% of daily steps. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the mechanics of a range of slips delivered while performing curvilinear turns and the recovery stepping reactions used by healthy young adults. We hypothesized that slip attributes would depend on the onset phase and perturbed foot relative to the turn, but not turn radius. We also expected the body’s plane of rotation to be opposite that of the slip direction, but in the same direction as the recovery step. Eighteen healthy young adults, wearing a full-body marker set, fall-arresting harness, and a WASP device on both feet, were instructed to walk along a 1.0-meter or 2.0-meter radius, 180° turn at their self-selected comfortable speed. After a random amount of time, a slip was triggered at early-stance, mid-stance, or late-stance to either the inside or outside foot relative to the turn. Each subject performed a total of 12 trials to experience all possible combinations of slip phase, targeted foot, and turn radius. Slip directions, distances, and peak velocities all depended on the targeted foot, while only directions and distances showed dependence on the slip onset phase. None of the variables exhibited a relationship with turn radius. Weak, significant correlations were found between slip direction and the plane of trunk angular momentum rotation, and between the latter and the direction of the recovery step. These results illustrate the diversity of potential slips that may be encountered while turning, suggest a possible control strategy for turning, and support existing concepts for the control of stepping reactions.
