Die Genisis Studie stellt fest, dass eine nachhaltige Globalisierung nur dann möglich ist, wenn sämtliche Akteure der Gesellschaft ihre Bottom Lines berücksichtigen. Soziale, ökologische und finanzielle Bereiche müssen gleichwertig behandelt werden. Dieser Grundansatz findet sich sowohl im Social Business als auch in der Venture Philanthropy wieder. Anhand des wachsenden Sektors der Zivilgesellschaft könnte die Annahme berechtigt sein, dass auch zunehmend Social Business Start-Ups in den Markt treten, die dann ähnliche Schwierigkeiten zu bewältigen haben wie die bisher untersuchten Gründungen. Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich daher mit der möglichen Unterstützung von Social Business Start-Ups durch Venture Philanthropy Gesellschaften und will einen Beitrag zur Entwicklung des jungen Marktes leisten. Da der deutsche Markt bisher wenig erschlossen ist und vielfach lediglich theoretische Möglichkeiten diskutiert werden, wird die Frage beleuchtet, ob sich Venture Philanthropy grundsätzlich für Social Business Start-Ups anbietet und wie relevant das Thema für den deutschen Markt ist. Um zu einer Antwort zu gelangen, wurden neben wissenschaftlicher Literatur aktuelle Studien und Presseberichte sowie relevante Tagungsunterlagen zum Thema Social Entrepreneurship zu Rate gezogen. Darüber hinaus wurden unstrukturierte Expertengespräche mit Michael Alberg-Seberich und Oliver Stark geführt. Diese dienten in erster Linie dazu, ein Gefühl für die unterschiedlichen Fragestellungen, die das Modell Social Business und das Thema Venture Philanthropy aufwerfen, zu entwickeln.

Since social entrepreneurship is a relatively young activity, resource-rich actors, like Philanthropic VCs, have considerable influence over how the space matures (Nicholls, 2010b). The resources and strategic advice that PhVCs provide their SEs shape an institutional logic for the domain. As such, PhVCs enhance legitimacy of the emerging area of social entrepreneurship. This monograph's main contribution is to delineate the current state of PhVC, identifying differences with traditional VC financing, and identify areas of future research. In particular, this work responds to Nicholls (2010b) and Austin et al.'s (2006) call for research on what types of finance SEs have access to. More specifically, we focus on understanding what PhVC is and how its social value creation investment logic makes it different from traditional VC, opening avenues for future research in this area. We do not cover how PhVCs raise their funds as we are interested in the relationship between the philanthropic investor and the SE.

This adoption of traditional business principles has captured the fascination of social change activists around the world, and yet, a lack of understanding its characteristics such as value proposition, opportunity, innovation and the creation of value can be observed. At the same time, similar changes in the philanthropic sector are taking place, with the phenomenon of Venture Philanthropy pioneering a new model of financing social change by translating the conventional venture capital approach from the business world to the social sphere, turning philanthropists into social investors. These complementing phenomena show a new relation between the financing and executing side in the social sector and challenge traditional categories such as non-profit vs. for-profit by choosing hybrid organizational forms. As these changes advance, efforts towards the creation of a social capital market that build on these two phenomena can be observed in order to restructure the current system of financing social change, applying principles from the financial markets. These changes challenge the traditional dichotomy of social and economic value that defines our current understanding of capitalism.

Venture philanthropy's main goal is to help create and grow stronger and more sustainable social enterprises. In order to do so, venture philanthropy organizations, similar to traditional venture capital, provide the social enterprise with financial resources and non-financial support. Whereas it is clear how much money they invest, there is less clarity in terms of the value they provide through non-financial support, more specifically relating its cost to the impact on investees. Drawing on prior work in venture capital and using in-depth exploratory research, we expand, refine and develop a model to measure the value, the impact and the cost, of the non-financial services provided by venture philanthropy. This model will be tested on a large-scale sample in a subsequent study. By focusing our attention on these changes, we are able to uncover the subtle differences between two apparently similar fields of practice.
