Excerpt from A Philosophy of Social Progress I will make bold to state my heresies dogmatically. Sociology is commonly described as the science of social life. I do not believe that there is or can be any science of social life; nor do I believe that sociology is or can be a science. There is a little scientific knowledge of some few of the conditions under which we socii live, of some few of the activities in which our social life is manifested. What passes for sociology is a collection of generalizations of very varying value; and it is inevitable that most social generalizations shall be at once more or less dignified guesses, and more or less disguised ex pressions of the hopes and fears, the prejudices and beliefs, of their originators. There may, however, be a philosophy of social life - or rather, of social change; but this will be transcendental, of course, and will always be very closely analogous to a religious faith. It will vary from age to age, just as the forms of faith do; that is to say, the expression of its dominant conceptions will vary. The Structure Of Social Science written by Michael H. Lessnoff and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-17 with Social Science categories.

Originally published in 1974, this book provided a most useful introductory survey of all the major philosophical issues relating to the social sciences at the time. While it covers a remarkable amount of ground in a short space, it is never superficial, for its lucid and careful analysis does full justice to the complexities and controversies of the subject. Nor is it merely a survey, for, while putting all points of view with scrupulous fairness, the author never fails to make clear his own, and to support it with reasoned argument. The book’s basic framework is a comparison of physical and social science, and in this context the author examines the problems of the mental aspect of social life, general laws, the individual and the social, explanation, and the relation of fact to value. He is far from advocating (as is often done) the wholesale acceptance or rejection of the ‘physical science model’ in the social sciences – rather, he carefully considers the various elements of the model in relation to the nature of social life. A noteworthy feature of this book is the philosophical analysis of statistical correlations and tests of significance, which bulk so large in the practice of social scientists, yet are all too seldom discussed in books of this kind. Also of special interest is the penetrating and original analysis of functionalist explanation in social science. Students of the social sciences and of philosophy will find this an admirable introduction to an important aspect of their respective disciplines.

The Sociology Philosophy Connection written by Mario Bunge and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Philosophy categories.

Most social scientists and philosophers claim that sociology and philosophy are disjointed fields of inquiry. Some have wondered how to trace the precise boundary between them. Mario Bunge argues the two fields are so entangled with one another that no demarcation is possible or, indeed, desirable. In fact, sociological research has demonstrably philosophical presuppositions. In turn, some findings of sociology are bound to correct or enrich the philosophical theories that deal with the world, our knowledge of it, or the ways of acting upon it. While Bunge's thesis would hardly have shocked Mill, Marx, Durkheim, or Weber, it is alien to the current sociological mainstream and dominant philosophical schools. Bunge demonstrates that philosophical problematics arise in social science research. A fertile philosophy of social science unearths critical presuppositions, analyzes key concepts, refines effective research strategies, crafts coherent and realistic syntheses, and identifies important new problems. Bunge examines Marx's and Durkheim's thesis that social facts are as objective as physical facts; the so-called Thomas theorem that refutes the behaviorist thesis that social agents react to social stimuli rather than to the way we perceive them; and Merton's thesis on the ethos of basic science which shows that science and morality are intertwined. He then considers selected philosophical problems raised by contemporary social studies. In a concluding chapter, Bunge argues forcefully against tolerance of shabby work in academic social science and philosophy alike.

Excerpt from A Philosophy of Social Progress I ask the reader's pardon for a lengthy preface and introduction. It is not necessary, for an understanding of the argument, that either should be read; most readers will do wisely to omit them - as I think they usually do. But both are necessary in order to justify the unusual treatment of the subject which I have adopted, and to explain the object of the book. For my aim is a double one: I have attempted to introduce students and general readers to a point of view which may increase their interest in the study of social life, and perhaps, too, their understanding of the issues involved in all progress and reform; I have attempted also to attack the usual conception of social science, and the usual methods of presenting that science. Of these two aims, the former has resulted in a treatment of some of the principles of sociology which is at any rate unusual. There is, I believe, no book on general sociology which is satisfactory for ordinary people; and in view of the extraordinary vagueness of the subject, it is unlikely that any satisfactory introductory book will be produced.
