El relato de no ficcin Los viajes del Penlope sigue las peripecias de una pequea goleta de 16 metros de largo, construida en Alemania en 1927, y las formas en que sus tres historias se imbrican con la historia personal y familiar del autor. Con el nombre Feuerland (Tierra del Fuego en alemn), el barco fue construido para la expedicin a tierras patagnicas y fueguinas del explorador y aviador alemn Gunther Plschow. Tras recorrer los canales fueguinos, Plschow vendi la goleta a un hacendado de las Malvinas en 1929. Desde ese ao y hasta abril de 2006, el Feuerland, con el nuevo nombre de Penlope, fue destinado al transporte de ovejas, vacas, caballos, lana e infinidad de cosas ms y fue usado para realizar estudios de fauna y flora en viajes que lo llevaron hasta los ms remotos confines de las Malvinas. Los kelpers ms memoriosos no recuerdan otro barco que haya recorrido tanto de la geografa islea como el Penlope. En abril de 2006, otro navegante alemn compr la goleta a su ltimo dueo malvinense, lo volvi a nombrar Feuerland y lo llev de regreso al puerto de donde haba salido haca 80 aos. Pero esta historia tiene, adems de sus partes alemana y malvinense, un tercer elemento, tal vez el ms dramtico. Durante la guerra de las Malvinas, la Armada argentina decomis la goleta para transporte de combustible, vveres y tropa. Uno de sus siete tripulantes, y nico conscripto del grupo, fue el autor de este libro. Por eso, la narracin de las tres historias del barco es tambin una bsqueda personal. En Buenos Aires, en Malvinas y en Alemania (de donde su padre sali al exilio, como judo perseguido, en 1936), el autor reconstruy la fascinante historia del Penlope, pero tambin la vida de los malvinenses desde la guerra hasta la actualidad, y ha buceado en el pasado del nacionalismo alemn anterior al nazismo y se ha reencontrado con los fantasmas de la guerra, con su propia historia.
