Neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, alcoholism, substance abuse and others are some of the most debilitating illnesses worldwide characterized by the complexity of causes, and lacking the laboratory tests that may promote diagnostic and prognostic procedures. Recent advances in neuroscience, genomic, genetic, proteomic and metabolomic knowledge and technologies have opened the way to searching biomarkers and endophenotypes, which may offer powerful and exciting opportunities to understand the etiology and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disorders. The challenge now is to translate these advances into meaningful diagnostic and therapeutic advances. This book offers a broad synthesis of the current knowledge about diverse topics of the biomarker and endophenotype strategies in neuropsychiatry. The book is organized into four interconnected volumes: “Neuropsychological Endophenotypes and Biomarkers” (with overview of methodological issues of the biomarker and endophenotype approaches in neuropsychiatry and some technological advances), “Neuroanatomical and Neuroimaging Endophenotypes and Biomarkers”, “Metabolic and Peripheral Biomarkers” and “Molecular Genetic and Genomic Markers”. The contributors are internationally and nationally recognized researchers and experts from 16 countries. This four-volume handbook is intended for a broad spectrum of readers including neuroscientists, psychiatrists, neurologists, endocrinologists, pharmacologists, clinical psychologists, general practitioners, geriatricians, health care providers in the field of neurology and mental health interested in trends that have crystallized in the last decade, and trends that can be expected to further evolve in the coming years. It is hoped that this book will also be a useful resource for the teaching of psychiatry, neurology, psychology and mental health.

Cancer Metastases Research written by Akira Watanabe and has been published by Nova Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Metastasis categories.

Metastasis is the spread of a disease from one organ or part to another non-contiguous organ or part. Only malignant tumour cells and infections have the capacity to metastasise. Cancer cells can "break away" from a primary tumour, penetrate into lymphatic and blood vessels, circulate through the bloodstream, and grow in a distant focus (metastasise) in normal tissues elsewhere in the body. Metastasis is considered a hallmark of malignancy. All tumours can metastasise albeit to varying degrees, barring a few exceptions (eg. Glioma and Basal cell carcinoma never metastasize). When cancer cells spread to form a new tumour, it is called a secondary, or metastatic tumour, and its cells are like those in the original tumour. This means, for example, that if breast cancer spreads (metastasizes) to the lung, the secondary tumour is made up of abnormal breast cells (not abnormal lung cells). The disease in the lung is then called metastatic breast cancer (not lung cancer). Only malignant tumour cells and infections have the capacity to metastasize. This book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.

Apolipoprotein Mimetics In The Management Of Human Disease written by G.M. Anantharamaiah and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-15 with Medical categories.

This comprehensive book provides not only the stages in the development of this unique and specialized field but also updates on the current state of research and development of apolipoprotein mimetics as therapeutic modalities for various lipid-mediated disorders. The book consists of 11 chapters all written by leading scientists from well-reputed laboratories in the USA. After an introduction by Dr. Godfrey Getz, Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and the Associate Editor of the Journal Lipid Research, the book presents a narration of how a theory can lead to the discovery of treatment modalities to several devastating diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis; asthma; atherosclerosis, chronic rejection of transplanted hearts and cancer. Present therapies for most of these diseases are not adequate. Using the models of two long anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory proteins (apolipoprotein A-I and apolipoprotein E with 243 and 299 amino acids, respectively) short mimetic peptides of 18 to 28 amino acid residues in length, which can be produced either synthetically or genetically in edible fruits and vegetables, have been shown to exert profound biological effects in a large number of animal models of diseases. The book also presents novel ideas, highly unexpected mechanisms of action in animal models and even in initial clinical studies in humans, which can lead to additional improvements in basic and clinical research in biological science. All the chapters are written by experts in their respective fields who have contributed immensely to the literature. This is the first compendium of this growing field presented in the form of a book.

Genetic Variation And Dietary Response written by Artemis P. Simopoulos and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-01-01 with Science categories.

This timely volume focuses on genetics and nutrition, and their interaction in the development of chronic diseases. Knowledge of genetic susceptibility to disease will not only help to identify those at higher risk for disease but also to ascertain their response to diet. The prospect of targeting specific dietary treatment at those predicted to gain the most therapeutic benefit clearly has important clinical and economic consequences, particularly in diseases of high prevalence. This book is unique in considering genetic variation in susceptibility to disease, and the importance of specific diets in influencing lipid levels in cardiovascular disease and bone density in osteoporosis. The contributions emphasize that dietary response is dependent on the genetic variant and that specific dietary recommendations rather than universal ones are needed for the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Bringing together vital information for the first time, this book is important reading for physicians, nutritionists, dietitians, geneticists, physiologists, molecular biologists, food technologists and policymakers.
