In 11 articles reprinted from a 1999 journal and a 1998 anthology, South African social scientists and those from elsewhere who have worked there provide an overview of the environmental justice movement in the country, which blossomed only after the battle against apartheid was won in the early 1990s. They trace its history and describe the key theoretical and practical issues it faces after a decade, what has changed and what remained the same, the most and least effective strategies, and future directions. Environmental law is a broad and interdisciplinary branch of law within the South African legal system. The promulgation of the 1996 Constitution of the Republic of South Africa provided for the potential acceleration of the development of South African environmental law jurisprudence. The Constitution grants every person the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being; as well as the right to have the environment protected through reasonable legislative and other measures that prevent pollution, ecological degradation, promote conservation and secure ecological sustainable development and the use of natural resources while promoting justifiable economic and social development. Environmental law deals with a large number of legal problems at the domestic level (i.e. South Africa), the regional life (i.e. African Union), the sub-regional level (i.e. Southern African Development Community), as well as at an international level (i.e. United Nations). At the domestic level, environmental law draws on all the formal sources of law including legislation, common law principles, customary law, indigenous law and international environmental law. The bulk of South African environmental law and principles are regulated by legislation at national level. The most important environmental legislative measures at a national level include the 1996 South African Constitution and the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) of 1998. Other additional environmental legislation in South Africa deal with issues such as conservation, pollution (atmospheric, land, marine, noise, water and waste management), energy and energy resources. The Southern African Environment provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the countries of the SADC region ? Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The area is one of rapid political, economic and social change, and each of the 10 country profiles in this book provides full and detailed information on the physical and human geography, environmental problems, resource base, institutional structures for environmental management and the issues associated with institutional change. Each profile was drafted by local environmental experts and is based on extensive fieldwork and research originally commissioned by the Dutch government. The report provides a unique synthesis of this richly-endowed but troubled region.

This is a pioneering study of the impact of humans on the environment in the history of South Africa and the role that the environment has played in shaping the history of human development in the country. It consists of two parts. The first is a series of local and particular studies, such as the invasion of prickly pear in the Eastern Cape; the impact of windmills and barbed wire on farming practice and the environment in the Karoo; and ecological change in the Lake St Lucia region. The second is a series of regional and continental comparisons that bring out both the similarities and differences in the environmental histories of South Africa, on the one hand, and South America, South Asia, Australia and the rest of Africa, on the other. Environment And History written by William Beinart and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-01-08 with History categories.

The influence of human economies and cultures on ecosystems is particularly striking in the new worlds into which Europeans have expanded over the past five hundred years. Using a comparative and multidisciplinary approach, Beinart and Coates examine this neglected aspect of the history of settler incursion and dominance in two frontier nations, the USA and South Africa. They also seek to explain change in indigenous ideas and practices towards the environment, and discuss the rise of popular environmentalism up to the present day.
