Excerpt from A Series of Lessons in Articulation and Lip-Reading: Containing Full Instructions for Teaching the Various Sounds of Spoken Language, With Copious Exercises In addition, if we can induce in our pupil the ability to recognise in the facial motions made in the utterance of sounds, their word equivalents, and with such certainty that he requires only occasionally the repetition of a word, or the writing or spelling of a new and unknown proper name, we may congratulate ourselves that he is placed, in the way of receiving ordinary communications, as nearly on a level with his more highly endowed fellow-creatures as his circumstances admit of. And, provided the conditions are favourable, this point can be reached with the average pupil. In providing for the instruction of his pupils, and in presenting the matter of it, as is here attempted, the author has held that the minute distinctions which are often drawn between the various shades of sound, together with the nice discrimination with which it is sometimes attempted to shew the action of the vocal organs in making the various articulations, do not fall within the scope of practical teaching. He holds that, however interesting and important these may be from a theoretical point of view, and for the teachers own needs, they contemplate a point of progress unattainable by the great majority of congenitally deaf pupils. The simplest classification, the easiest explanation, are for our present purpose the best, alike for the teacher and the pupil. To import into the instruction of the deaf the teaching which is appropriate in the case of those who, having all their senses, are to be trained for the Church, the Bar, or the Stage, is to encumber the ground needlessly, and cannot conduce to general success. Excerpt from Manual of Articulation Teaching, Vol. 1 BY far the greater number of principles and theories which are advocated in this little volume did not origi nate in my mind. I adopted them after a good deal of thought and study and experiment. Being anxious to gain information from any source whatever, and to make use of anything that might be beneficial to my pupils, I have always tried to get hold of every book and periodi cal from which I thought I could gather knowledge that might directly or indirectly aid me in my work of giving speech to the deaf. I would gladly mention the names of all those whose ideas I have made my own, and whose suggestions I have followed in working out the system of instruction which is described herein, but refrain from attempting to do so, because I am afraid I might not remember them all and, therefore, take this way of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to every one of them. This manual is designed not only for the professional teacher, but also for the mother who is anxious to gather information that will be sufficient to enable her to teach a little deaf child at home for a while, till it is old enough to be sent away to a distant school. Such mothers might shrink from undertaking the task if they found that they would have to study a bulky volume in order to preparethemselves for it. Hence it was thought best to make this book as small as possible. But although it is small there is enough in it to give any person of common sense a good idea of what is to be done with a beginner in articulation, and how it is to be done. After all, the teaching of Speech to the deaf is not, as some people believe, such a wonderful, mysterious art that only those few can master it who are naturally gifted with such special talents as ordinary mortals do not possess and a description of it may be full without being particularly voluminous. In this connection I will also say that, in my opinion, our work does not require such a marvelous amount of patience as many seem to think. Perhaps my enthusiasm for it gets the best of my judgment, yet I must say that it is the most fascinating work, and I do not see how anything that is so highly interesting can be a tax on anybody's patience. How To Speak written by Adelaide Patterson and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-12 with Poetry categories.

Excerpt from How to Speak: Exercises in Voice Culture and Articulation Most of the excellent books on Voice Culture which have been published deal with the subject from the viewpoint of the singer. Our aim is to improve the speaking voice; therefore the emphasis is put on that side of the matter. In all the discussions and exercises relating to articulation work, the necessity for the right mental attitude of the speaker toward his audience has been stressed. The obligation to make himself heard, and a real sympathy with the audience, should be felt by everyone, whether he is speaking hi a large hall, a schoolroom or a drawing-room; and the majority of teachers recognize the importance of combining this feeling of responsibility with the mechanical drills. The foundation for the work outlined here is built, mainly, upon the technical courses at Emerson College of Oratory in Boston; and the writers experience in platform reading and teaching in grade work, as well as in teachers college classes, has proved the value of the practice involved. This book has been written in response to the request of many teachers in the public schools for a definite outline of work to develop the correct use of the voice and distinct articulation. It shows the logical order of the drills used every day in the Public Speaking classroom at the Rhode Island College of Education.
