In 1817 London, a stolen treasure may hold a clue to a ghastly crime: “Page-turning suspense and a fascinating mystery . . . Masterful.” —Deborah Crombie, New York Times–bestselling author of A Bitter Feast Ensconced in the comfort of their elegant home in London’s Berkeley Square, Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch are no longer subject to the perilous life of intrigue they led during the Napoleonic Wars. Once an Intelligence Agent, Malcolm is now a Member of Parliament, and Suzanne is one of the city’s most sought-after hostesses. But a late-night visit from a friend who’s been robbed may lure them back into the dangerous world they thought they’d left behind . . . Playwright Simon Tanner had in his possession what may be a lost version of Hamlet, and the thieves were prepared to kill for it. But the Rannochs suspect there’s more at stake than a literary gem, for the play may conceal the identity of a Bonapartist spy—along with secrets that could force Malcolm and Suzanne to abandon their newfound peace and confront their own dark past . . . Praise for Teresa Grant’s The Paris Affair “Twists and turns galore, swashbuckling adventure and suspense throughout . . . for readers in search of smart historical mysteries.” —Tasha Alexander, New York Times–bestselling author “I loved this book! Superb!” —Deborah Crombie, New York Times–bestselling author “Unravel the secrets and lies at the heart of an almost impenetrable mystery . . . Thrilling!” —Deanna Raybourn, New York Times–bestselling author “A treat . . . Readers will be holding their breat

Life was harsh and dangerous for the prospectors of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898-1899. But it was also a grand adventure. Few got rich but those who survived had a tale to tell. Wallis R. Sanborn's entertaining narrative of his journey from Illinois to the Yukon provides rare insight into the daily lives of the Klondike stampeders. He describes through his letters and diary what they ate, what they wore, the trails they mushed, the roadhouses and tents in which they slept, and the mining process. His original sketches--capturing the natural world around him, his cabin and hand-crafted furniture--and his hand-drawn maps are included, along with photographs, handbills, travel receipts and miner's certificates.

Defining Danger written by James W. Clarke and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-31 with Social Science categories.

Since 1789, when George Washington became the first president of the United States, forty-three men have held the nation’s highest office. Four were killed by assassins, and serious attempts were made on the lives of eight others.Add to that list Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X,and it is reasonable to conclude that political prominence in the U.S. entails grave risks. In Defining Danger, James W. Clarke explores the cultural and psychological linkages that define assassinations and a new era of domestic terrorism in America. Clarke notes an upsurge in political violence beginning with the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Since then, there have been ten assassination attempts on nationally prominent political leaders. That is two more than the eight recorded in the previous 174 years of the nation’s presidential history. New elements of domestic terror in American life were introduced in the 1990s by Timothy McVeigh, the “Oklahoma City Bomber,” Ted Kaczynski, the “Unabomber,” and Eric Rudolph, the abortion clinic bomber. These men were politically motivated; their crimes were unprecedented. These events and the perpetrators behind them are among the subjects of this book. Defining Danger conveys two central themes. The first is that individual acts of violence directed toward America’s democratically elected leaders represent a defining element of American politics. The second addresses how danger is defined, through an analysis of the motives and characteristics of twenty-one perpetrators responsible for these acts of political violence where shots were fired, or bombs detonated, and in most instances, victims died. The book is written in an accessible and engaging style that will appeal to the informed general reader, as well as to professionals in a variety of fields—especially in the wake of recent events and the specter of future violence that, sadly, haunts us all.
