At the present time there is a global tendency to take an integral or holistic approach to the business management. This paper deals with the evolution of two systems approaches, the first one is a methodology for the change, Soft Systems Methodology, (SSM), and the second one is a model, the Viable System Model, (VSM), both systemic approaches are analyzed from its origins within the classical systems theory to its evolution within the complex systems theory. New visions and concepts are included in a new version of those approaches, a new vision of SSM is developed and the Multiprocesses Management Viable Systems Model named Virtual VSM is also developed. The result is a contemporary vision of a systemic methodology and a systemic model that is in homeostasis with time, technology, organizations and fundamentally with the human being. This is a contribution to systems sciences and management sciences that should help in the development of a new systems vision for understanding the organizational complexity of our times

In 2016 European banking supervision launched a thematic review in order to assess in more depth the profitability drivers and business models of the significant institutions (SIs). This has been a key priority for European banking supervision, especially due to the challenges that banks in the euro area are facing, triggering the need to review their business models. These challenges include, among others, low profitability and pressure on revenues from the economic environment, the low level of interest rates and high competition; elevated levels of non-performing loans (NPLs) and the need to clean up balance sheets; digitalisation and new competitors (fintech and big tech companies); tougher regulation and the need to adapt to it; etc. This thematic review had the following objectives: to provide tools and methodologies to facilitate consistent business model analysis at firm level by the Joint Supervisory Teams (JSTs); to assess banks' ability to steer strategically their business models; to monitor the consequences of weak profitability for banks' risk-taking behaviour; and to enrich horizontal analysis by integrating JSTs' insights in a consistent way across banks. The thematic review mainly took on a micro perspective, with the bank-specific analysis being the main pillar and adding value to the exercise.

NGITS2002 was the ?fth workshop of its kind, promoting papers that discuss new technologies in information systems. Following the success of the four p- vious workshops (1993, 1995, 1997, and 1999), the ?fth NGITS Workshop took place on June 24–25, 2002, in the ancient city of Caesarea. In response to the Call for Papers, 22 papers were submitted. Each paper was evaluated by three Program Committee members. We accepted 11 papers from 3 continents and 5 countries, Israel (5 papers), US (3 papers), Germany, Cyprus, and The Netherlands (1 paper from each). The workshop program consisted of ?ve paper sessions, two keynote lectures, and one panel discussion. The topics of the paper sessions are: Advanced Query Processing, Web Applications, Moving Objects, Advanced Information Models, and Advanced Software Engineering. We look at the challenges facing the Single Supervisory Mechanism in the coming years, and discuss vulnerabilities in the euro area’s banking system, as well as possible improvements in the SSM’s internal practices. Among the former are low profitability, the increased role of the shadow banking system and weak governance. The latter include an overly complex regulatory framework, limits on staffing that lead to excessive usage of consultants, the need for more transparency and accountability. The SSM should help banks achieve more sustainable returns by making supervisory requirements less complex. It should monitor shadow banks, ensuring that traditional lenders are isolated from possible shocks. As for governance, the SSM ought to engage in a multi-year action plan aimed at improving ethics, technical qualifications, checks and balances. Regulatory complexity must be reduced by further harmonising national rules. Constraints on the SSM’s budget and human resources should be loosened, but the use of external consultants ought to be limited to special cases. Accountability and transparency can be enhanced, e.g., through greater disclosure on resources and objectives, SREP and other internal methodologies, and on decisions taken by the SSM’s Administrative Board of Review. The European Court of Auditors should be entitled to assess the soundness of the SSM’s processes, without interfering with individual supervisory decisions.
