Ihr heutiges Erscheinungsbild, vor allem die Dreikonchenanlage, stammt gr tenteils aus der Zeit nach dem 2. Weltkrieg. St. Maria im Kapitol war die am meisten besch digte romanische Kirche in K ln. Die Damenstiftskirche nahm im 13. Jahrhundert immer mehr die Rolle einer offiziellen "Stadtkirche" an; so fanden hier die Einf hrungen der B rgermeister oder offizielle Trauerfeiern statt. Die bedeutende Stellung der Kirche im alten K ln wird auch an anderer Stelle deutlich: An Weihnachten zelebrierte der Erzbischof die erste Messe in St. Maria im Kapitol, die zweite im nahe gelegenen St. C cilien und die dritte im Dom. Zu dem Kirchenkomplex geh rte noch der im Westen vorgelagerte Kreuzgang, der Friedhof im Osten und weitere kleine Geb ude, wie das Stiftsgeb ude oder das btissinnenhaus.1 Der Name "in capitolio" wurde erstmals in einer Urkunde von 1189 erw hnt. Ausgrabungen 1956 haben aber tats chlich Teile eines r mischen Tempels aus der Zeit um das 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr. gefunden.2 Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt in der besonderen Ber cksichtigung der Restaurierungsarbeiten im 19. Jahrhundert und stellt die Frage nach dem Verbleib der Neuerungen in der heutigen Zeit.
