A ride on a steam train is a popular family outing. More than 100 heritage railways cater for that demand, capturing the spirit of nostalgia while preserving the engines and equipment of past days of rail travel. Their interests even extend to the modern era of 1960's - 70's diesels. Those heritage railways themselves have a long pedigree, back to 1951, when a group of enthusiasts saved the Talyllyn Railway in mid-Wales from closure. They ran this railway as volunteers, out of their love of the little trains and a desire to keep it going. Their example was followed by many more preservation societies who preserved and restored branch lines, country lines and industrial lines for our enjoyment now.Six decades have passed, and we are now beginning to realize what an impressive history the heritage railway movement has. This book traces that history, from the humble beginnings the hopes and ambitions of the pioneers on the different railway projects. There were times of failure and frustration, as some fell by the wayside, but others have made it through times of adversity to become the major heritage businesses of today.

Even today, over 50 years after the last scheduled service was hauled by a steam locomotive in Britain, many people's abiding image of rail travel comes from that age of steam, a romantic view of big muscular locomotives, belching clouds of steam and smoke, hauling long, snaking trains through picturesque countryside to the sound of the great chuffing from the engine, the thunder of the wheels on the rails and the haunting notes of the whistle. All this, and the fact that engines came in so many different shapes and sizes, conspired to give steam locomotives personalities of their own, to make them seem almost as if they were alive - quite different from today's super-efficient, quiet, clean and anonymous electric trains. Britain's railway system is the oldest in the world, and British engineers pioneered the development of the steam locomotive along with iron and steel rails that permitted rapid expansion. They were pivotal in the worldwide adoption of railways, and steam became the driving force of industrial expansion in the 19th century. As the years passed, steam locomotives became ever more powerful and efficient, culminating in the record run of the LNER locomotive Mallard, which attained a speed of 126mph in 1938. In those days, before air travel became commonplace, steam railways were the crucial link to the coastal ports and the Continent, the USA and the world. Royalty, politicians and celebrities could be seen at London's Victoria station boarding luxurious boat trains pulled by gleaming, streamlined steam locomotives. Travel then was an exciting adventure, and the steam train was where the adventure began. In this book, almost 250 photographs from the vast archives of Mirrorpix provide a nostalgic and fascinating look back at the age of steam, from its heyday of the early 20th century to its demise in the 1950s and 1960s, and subsequent resurrection through the work of the many railway preservation groups.

Presented in chronological order, the last locomotive class featured in this volume of 60 classic engines is the British Railways standard 2-10-0 9F freight class which included the Evening Star, the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. The Evening Star, completed in 1960, represented the culmination of steam-locomotive evolution and design, dating back a century and a half. As soon as it was built, the Evening Star was ear-marked for preservation as part of the National Collection and was appropriately finished in lined Brunswick green with a copper capped chimney and brass fittings, quite resplendent when compared to the utilitarian unlined black of its nameless class mates. Withdrawn in 1965, the Evening Star had a very short working life in common with most of the other standard classes included in the 15,000 engines scrapped by British Railways in the decade up to 1968. The wholesale scrapping of steam was only part of the radical transformation that took place on Britain's railways in the 10 years up to 1970 and it was probably the suddenness of that change and nostalgia for the cosy familiarity of railways largely unchanged over the preceding 50 years that provided the impetus for Britain's thriving railway heritage industry. As a tribute to the success of that preservation industry, representatives of virtually all the 60 engines included in this book, can still be seen, whether working on heritage railways, as static exhibits in museums or even running on mainline specials.A chronological record the engines featured in this book are important for either technological innovation or else simple workmanlike efficiency such as the ubiquitous 0-6-0 freight engines built in their thousands and confirming their durability by remaining in service for 50, 60 or even, in some cases, 70 years.
