This book tells the history of the Adriatic from the first cultures of the Neolithic Age through to the present day. All of the great civilizations and cultures that bordered and crossed the Adriatic are discussed: Ancient Greece and Rome, Byzantium and the Holy Roman Empire, Venice and the Ottomans, Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity and Islam. Byzantium was replaced by Venice, queen of the Adriatic, which reached its zenith at the beginning of the sixteenth century and maintained commercial and military hegemony in its Gulf, sharing the sea with the Turks, the Habsburgs, the Pope and the Spanish vice-kingdom of Naples. It was Napoleon who ended Venice’s reign in 1797. In the nineteenth century, the Austrian Empire prevailed, and Central Europe reached the Mediterranean through the Adriatic. United Italy placed its most symbolic frontier in the eastern Adriatic, clashing with Austria-Hungary in the First World War. The twentieth century was marked by the prolonged conflicts and eventually peace between Yugoslavia, Albania and Italy. Il tema della presenza longobarda nel sud ha conosciuto nel tempo una minore fortuna archeologica, eccetto sporadiche eccezioni, rispetto a quanto è avvenuto nel centro-nord della penisola. Ci sono delle ragioni che spiegano questa situazione: il maggiore e più precoce radicamento dei Longobardi nell’Italia settentrionale; un’evidenza archeologica che, per quanto consegnata quasi alla sola dimensione funeraria, è senz’altro quantitativamente superiore. Tuttavia questa ‘fortuna’, seppure precoce, non ha aiutato nel passato a costruire un’archeologia medievale in Italia; e, nel contempo, questa maggiore attenzione ha ben poco contribuito a sviluppare nuovi modelli teorici di approccio allo studio dei contesti funerari, diversamente da quanto è avvenuto, a partire dagli anni ’80 del secolo scorso, in molte altre regioni europee, a seguito dell’affermarsi del post-processualismo. Questo volume di oltre 500 pagine costituisce un testo estremamente utile per chi voglia affrontare, d’ora in avanti, lo studio del periodo longobardo nel sud della penisola. Un periodo che si presenta in forme certo meno chiare rispetto a quanto non sia possibile percepire, ad esempio, nel nord dell’Italia, dove l’unitarietà del Regno, per quanto non continua nel tempo, facilità e giustifica la possibilità di letture più generali. La creazione, nel sud, di ducati sostanzialmente autonomi, provoca quel senso di frammentazione che anche questo libro non nasconde, anzi tende in qualche modo ad enfatizzare. Si tratta di un approccio che va sicuramente condiviso e perseguito, anche per superare quelle declinazioni generalizzanti che rischiano di appiattire la lettura dei processi storici su alcune parole d’ordine come la ‘militarizzazione’ del territorio; oppure leggono la presenza longobarda quasi esclusivamente attraverso l’evidenza funeraria, legandola alla sola rappresentazione etnico-culturale.

[Italiano]: I Milites Baroli censiti nel Catalogus Baronum costituiscono il punto di partenza di questa indagine sulla formazione, le caratteristiche e l’evoluzione dei poteri signorili nella Valle dell’Ofanto e nella città di Barletta tra età normanna e primo angioina, con particolare attenzione all’élite militare e politica territoriale e alle sue relazioni con i sovrani del Regno. Per essi a lungo i casati locali organizzarono e controllarono il territorio ofantino, favorendo il sinecismo esercitato da Barletta nei confronti della vicina Canne. L’Autore riflette sulla pervasività del potere signorile, sul rapporto dell’élite locale con le fondazioni ecclesiastiche d’Oltremare e la Terrasanta, sulle peculiarità dell’intervento esercitato dai principali casati nei luoghi del potere politico e religioso e sulle caratteristiche della preminenza. Particolare attenzione è posta nei confronti delle dinamiche del conflitto, latente nella società cittadina, come elemento fondamentale per la comprensione del funzionamento dei meccanismi del potere in ambito locale e sovralocale. Il volume si inserisce in questo modo nel dibattito sulla struttura sociale e politica delle città dell’Italia meridionale e sui poteri signorili nel Regno di Sicilia normanno, svevo e primo angioino, di cui Barletta costituisce un caso complesso e di grande interesse./[English]: The Milites Baroli censused in the Catalogus Baronum constitute the beginning of this study on the formation, characteristics and evolution about lordship powers in the Ofanto Valley and particularly in the city of Barletta between the Norman and early Angevin age. Through a focused and complex rereading of the existing documents, the volume analyzes the structure of the Barletta society with particular attention to its military and political élite and to the relationship with central power. Structured during the XII century consequently the intervention of the Norman crown, for the southern sovereigns the milites of Barletta organized and controlled the Ofanto Valley, favoring the unification of the Apulian center with civitas and the bishopric of Canne. Strongly put to the test in the secular relationship with the crown, the élite of the Apulian city is here probed through the study of prosopographic profiles and the pervasiveness of the power used by main local military families. In this point of view, is analyzed both the relationship established from time to time with the ecclesiastical foundations of Outremer and with the Holy Land, and the quality of the intervention in the main places of political and religious power and the characteristics of supremacy. In that sense, particular attention is focused on the dynamics of the conflict, hidden in the city society, as a basic element for understanding the inner workings of power in the local and supralocal context. In this way, the volume is part of the debate on the social and political structure of the cities in the south of Italy and on the aristocratic powers in the Kingdom of Sicily, of which Barletta is a complex and very interesting case.
