Your choices now and in the future are guided by the past. Tap into the resources and experiences of our Elders today! The Indians who travelled to St. Vincent over a hundred years ago demonstrated how human beings can adapt to deal with difficult situations. In the face of dire economic conditions and famines in India many of them showed bravery by travelling abroad. Their lives and that of their descendants over the years show how they survived and became successful. In this book you will be captivated by the Elders' stories of hardship, risk-taking, struggle, adaptation, assimilation, strategy, identity, resilience, progress, strength and success. The book is a collection of eight fascinating interviews followed by thematic analyses and commentaries. The stories are preceded with a background of the historical situation that existed both in India and St.Vincent before the Indians embarked on their journeys to the Caribbean. They are followed by a periodic review of the narratives and a consideration of available records while also looking at the current situation in St. Vincent and India and future relationship possibilities. "This work by Lenroy Thomas is a compelling read. Although it is dedicated to Indo-Vincentians in SVG and in the diaspora, it is really for all Vincentians since the Indian population is a significant part of the nation and has made valuable contributions to overall national development... I congratulate Lenroy Thomas on this piece of work and was pleased that he used oral history as a tool for developing the story of his people." Dr. Adrian Fraser, Retired Head of the University of the West Indies Open Campus. This book by Lenroy Thomas is a rich, multi-layered and multi-faceted resource. It contains the historical background of Indians in SVG, transcribed interviews with elders, and rare photographs. The value of this book resides in its worth as a source of secondary and primary data. The analysis of the interviews themselves can be the material for another book. - Dr. Kumar Mahabir, Anthropologist, University of Guyana

Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist: A “stellar collection” of stories about navigating life off the reservation, filled with laughter and heartbreak (People). In these lyrical, affectionate tales from the author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, characters navigate the crossroads of culture, battle stereotypes, and find themselves through everything from politics to basketball. Richard, the narrator of “Lawyer’s League,” grows up in Seattle, the son of “an African American giant who played defensive end for the University of Washington Huskies” and “a petite Spokane Indian ballerina.” A woman is caught in a restaurant when a suicide bomb goes off in “Can I Get a Witness.” And Estelle Walks Above (née Estelle Miller), studies her way off the Spokane Indian Reservation and goes on to both enjoy and resent the company of the white women of Seattle—who see her as a shamanic genius, and look to her for guidance on everything from sex and fashion to spirituality. These and the other “warm, revealing, invitingly roundabout stories” in Ten Little Indians run the gamut from earthy wit to sobering emotional truth, mapping the outer reaches of the human heart (The New York Times Book Review). From a New York Times–bestselling and National Book Award–winning author, these tales, “rambunctious and exuberant, bristle with an edgy and mordant humor” (Chicago Tribune). This ebook features an illustrated biography including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

A compelling chronicle of what it means to be Indian in a foreign land. In an age when India is one of the strongest emerging markets and a developing superpower, tens of thousands of Indians leave the country each year to seek new lives on distant shores. What are they looking for and what do they really find? In a first-of-its-kind narrative, journalist and American expat Simran Chawla documents the contemporary Indian immigrant experience in various corners of the world – from Alaska to the UK, Europe to Africa, the Americas to the Middle East. In this book, she tells the story of families like the Singhs who farm in the heartland of Italy just south of Verona; discovers the lucrative Indian wedding industry in the Gulf or United Arab Emirates; learns about the community of ʻaunties’ in Orlando who have found meaning in their lives once again by organizing sewing get-togethers; watches a cricket match between diamond traders in Antwerp; and explores the heartbreaking price of living illegally in London. In lucid, affecting prose, Searching for Home tells the stories of people who, though separated by thousands of kilometres, share experiences that continue to bind them to their homeland.

Zitkala-Sa (1876-1938) was a pioneering voice in the movement for Native American rights. Born on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota, she spent her life as an activist working to bring the history and cultural concerns of Native Americans to the broader public. In "American Indian Stories" (1921), her most famous work, Zitkala-Sa draws upon her experience as a Native American child faced with the reality of cultural submission. A collection of fiction and non-fiction, "American Indian Stories" explores the pressures Native Americans faced to assimilate to white American culture. Zitkala-Sa later established and presided over the National Council of American Indians, helping to further the interests of American Indians. These stories and tales create an intimate portrait of the rich cultural history of the American Indian, and double as source material from one of America's most successful Native American activists.
