The Reception of Charles Dickens in Europe offers a full historical survey of Dickens's reception in all the major European countries and many of the smaller ones, filling a major gap in Dickens scholarship, which has by and large neglected Dickens's fortunes in Europe, and his impact on major European authors and movements. Essays by leading international critics and translators give full attention to cultural changes and fashions, such as the decline of Dickens's fortunes at the end of the nineteenth century in the period of Naturalism and Aestheticism, and the subsequent upswing in the period of Modernism, in part as a consequence of the rise of film in the era of Chaplin and Eisenstein. It will also offer accounts of Dickens's reception in periods of political upheaval and revolution such as during the communist era in Eastern Europe or under fascism in Germany and Italy in particular.

Inventing the Jew follows the evolution of stereotypes of Jews from the level of traditional Romanian and other Central-East European cultures (their legends, fairy tales, ballads, carols, anecdotes, superstitions, and iconographic representations) to that of "high" cultures (including literature, essays, journalism, and sociopolitical writings), showing how motifs specific to "folkloric antisemitism" migrated to "intellectual antisemitism." This comparative perspective also highlights how the images of Jews have differed from that of other "strangers" such as Hungarians, Germans, Roma, Turks.

Miercuri, 30 iulie 1975: după aproape doi ani de negocieri istovitoare, lideri politici din 33 de state europene, Statele Unite și Canada se reuneau la Helsinki pentru a pune în scenă ultimul act al Conferinței pentru Securitate și Cooperare în Europa. Negocierea acordurilor de la Helsinki a fost cu siguranță cel mai remarcabil eveniment diplomatic din perioada Războiului Rece și a depășit, prin amploarea sa, alte adunări similare în istoria modernă europeană, de la Pacea Westfalică încoace. Prin comparație, „legendarul” Congres de la Viena din 1814-1815 sau Congresul de la Berlin din 1878 par doar „petreceri cu ceai” unde te duci îmbrăcat mai elegant, avea să remarce prim-ministrul britanic Harold Wilson în discursul său de la Helsinki. Pentru a-și boteza roadele muncii de negociere, diplomații de la CSCE au împrumutat termenul de „Act final” de la iluștrii lor predecesori întruniți în Congresul de la Viena în urmă cu 160 de ani. La Helsinki nu s-a pus însă capăt niciunui război și nu s-au redesenat frontiere între statele europene. Nici nu s-a dansat vals, așa cum își petreceau serile după sesiunile de negocieri diplomatice pleiada de oameni de stat cu titluri nobiliare reuniți la Viena să stabilească o nouă ordine în Europa după tumultul războaielor napoleoniene. CSCE a lăsat totuși o moștenire bogată în istoria diplomatică europeană, mai puțin apreciată de contemporani, dar prețuită de generațiile viitoare.
