Con i trovatori si può far nascere la poesia moderna. Ma questa tradizione capitale per la civiltà letteraria europea resta ancora lontana da noi per molte ragioni e soprattutto perché quanto si scrive su di essa sembra destinato a ricadere nelle opposte modalità dello specialismo più esasperato da un lato e della divulgazione dall’altro. Questo libro tenta di percorrere una strada diversa, adottando un impianto fortemente saggistico, ma fornendo al lettore gli strumenti per una conoscenza non superficiale della materia. L’Introduzione traccia per sommi capi una storia esterna della lirica occitana, mentre in ogni capitolo la discussione ruota attorno a uno o più componimenti (ventiquattro in tutto), tradotti e commentati, che hanno la funzione di mettere chi legge a diretto contatto con la lingua, le strutture formali e i concreti problemi d’interpretazione dei testi. Impostato per tagli sincronici e per nuclei tematici, e con parti dedicate alle personalità più importanti, il volume offre uno spaccato complessivo dei due secoli che hanno visto i trovatori protagonisti nelle corti di tutta Europa nel plasmare un gusto poetico e un modello di comportamento di cui ancora possiamo sentirci eredi. In questa seconda edizione un ampio Excursus segue la storia dei trovatori nella modernità, dai progetti editoriali di Bembo nel Cinquecento fino al loro ritorno nel Novecento nei versi di Pound, di Pasolini, di Giudici e fino alla loro apparizione in rete nel Duemila. La sezione «Note ai margini» contiene brevi interventi che affrontano questioni o anche nodi interpretativi venuti alla luce di recente o mai chiariti in maniera esauriente (come il significato di midons, la donna amata).
