Cannabis on Campus is a comprehensive resource on the implications of marijuana legalization for college campuses. It is essential reading for college administrators and other professionals responsible for overseeing drug policy and addressing marijuana use in higher education. The authors use their considerable experience in college alcohol and other drug (AOD) counseling to provide a sweeping look at the cannabis culture found in our universities. Chapters alternate between historical context, research and analysis, and student interviews, providing an evidence-based, nuanced understanding of the role of marijuana use in today’s college campuses, as well as insights and recommendations for a post-legalization future.

Substance abuse is one of higher education's worst problems not only in terms of financial but also human cost. Drawing upon current theory and research, this handbook arrives at practical solutions to these problems. While there are divergent models of research and practice in substance abuse which have led to competing models of intervention, treatment, and prevention, this book seeks to reconcile those differences. It allows the reader to understand substance abuse from theoretical/research perspectives and guides the reader from conceptualization to programming to intervention with the substance abusing student. The book is divided into three parts. The first deals with ways of conceptualizing substance-abuse and the models which have been the basis for developing intervention strategies. Theories of how substance abuse problems develop are discussed and some suggestions are given as to how these theories may guide prevention, intervention, and treatment. The second part focuses on how one should establish policies and programming on campus, and how these programming and policy decisions can help in prevention strategies. The final part outlines how one can assess, intervene, and provide treatment for a substance abuser. Included here is a chapter on self-help groups and how they may be used in support of treatment and aftercare.

In response to recent alcohol-related tragedies and to ongoing concern about unacceptable levels of alcohol and other drug use on college campuses, Congress authorized the U.S. Department of Education to identify and promote effective campus-based prevention programs. Since 1999, the U.S. Department of Education has awarded approximately $3.5 million to institutions of higher education (IHEs) in recognition of their programs. Through grant competitions held in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, 34 programs were designated as model programs. Each campus received an award to maintain, improve, or further evaluate its alcohol and other drug prevention efforts, and to disseminate information to other campuses where the programs might be replicated. To be given an award under this program, a campus was required to describe an innovative program or policy that was integrated into an overall comprehensive alcohol and other drug prevention effort. The institution also had to provide evidence that the innovative program or policy was effective in reducing the problems resulting from alcohol or other drug abuse. The award-winning programs and policies are described in this document. Each model program is described as it was at the time of its award. [For the 2002 edition of this report, see ED475072.].
