The Kalevala, or runic, songs is a tradition at least a few thousand years old. It was shared by Finns, Estonians and other speakers of smaller Baltic-Finnic languages inhabiting the eastern side of the Baltic Sea in North-Eastern Europe. This book offers a combined perspective of a musicologist and a linguist to the structure of the runic songs. Archival recordings of the songs originating mostly from the first half of the 20th century were used as source material for this study. The results reveal a complex interaction between three different processes participating in singing: speech prosody, metre, and musical rhythm.

The company town, source of so much of Canada's wealth, was-and is-a place with nowhere to hide. First published in 1971, Rex Lucas's Minetown, Milltown, Railtown is a groundbreaking study of what it's like to live in such communities. Today, with the oil-sands boom and rising commodity prices affecting everything from the value of the Canadian dollar to the balance of power within Confederation, single-industry towns remain as central as ever to the country's economic and social life. Minetown is a compelling portrait not just of Canada's past, but of its present and future, too. Minetown, Milltown, Railtown: Life in Canadian Communities of Single Industry is a Wynford Book-one of a series of titles representing significant milestones in Canadian literature, thought, and scholarship. New introductions place each book in a modern context and show its continuing relevance.

This book brings together exciting new work in archaeology, linguistics and genetics to reveal a varied and dynamic view of Australia's Aboriginal past, and its place in the prehistory of the Pacific region. Each discipline provides some pieces of the jigsaw: put these together and a fullerpicture emerges. To the dates and excavations of archaeology we can fit linguistic models of cultural contact and spread, and genetic evidence for past patterns of marriage and migration. Alll three disciplines point to sweeping changes in the mid-Holocene, linked to expansion of the Pama-Nyunganlanguage family over most of the continent. The book includes introductory chapters surveying the methods and current state of knowledge in each contributing discipline as well as sections dealing with regional patterns within Australia; culture contact; the Pama-Nyungan question; and the broaderAsia-Pacific perspective
