It’s the summer of 1966... The fundamental old ways: chastity, rationality, harmony, sobriety, even democracy: blasted to nothing or crumbling under siege. The city glows. It echoes. It pulses. It bleeds pastel and fuzzy, spicy, paisley and soft. This is how it's always going to be: smashing clothes, brilliant music, easy sex, eternal youth, the eyes of everybody, everyone's first thought, the top of the world, right here, right now: Swinging London. Shawn Levy has a genius for unearthing the secret history of popular culture. The Los Angeles Times called King of Comedy, his biography of Jerry Lewis, "a model of what a celebrity bio ought to be–smart, knowing, insightful, often funny, full of fascinating insiders' stories," and the Boston Globe declared that Rat Pack Confidential "evokes the time in question with the power of a novel, as well as James Ellroy's American Tabloid and better by far than Don DeLillo's Underworld." In Ready, Steady, Go! Levy captures the spirit of the sixties in all its exuberance. A portrait of London from roughly 1961 to 1969, it chronicles the explosion of creativity–in art, music and fashion–and the revolutions–sexual, social and political–that reshaped the world. Levy deftly blends the enthusiasm of a fan, the discerning eye of a social critic and a historian's objectivity as he re-creates the hectic pace and daring experimentation of the times–from the utter transformation of rock 'n' roll by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to the new aesthetics introduced by fashion designers like Mary Quant, haircutters like Vidal Sassoon, photographers like David Bailey, actors like Michael Caine and Terence Stamp and filmmakers like Richard Lester and Nicolas Roeg to the wild clothing shops and cutting-edge clubs that made Carnaby Street and King's Road the hippest thoroughfares in the world. Spiced with the reminiscences of some of the leading icons of that period, their fans and followers, and featuring a photographic gallery of well-known faces and far-out fashions, Ready, Steady, Go! is an irresistible re-creation of a time and place that seemed almost impossibly fun.

Here's the go-go mini-guide that told the sophisticated traveler where to go and what to do in Swinging London of the '60s, the fun capital of the world in that decade: groovy boutiques, casinos, discos, pubs, restaurants, art galleries, hotels, theatres, etc. The Swinger's Guide to London also tells you how to get in on the action at such places and elsewhere: what to expect, how to prepare, how to behave, how to meet people, hear about parties, and just generally fit in with the scene--how to be a jet-setter, in other words, not just a tourist. Simply fab.

Swinging Sixties takes a new look at a revolutionary moment in 20th-century fashion. Its starting point is the publication in April 1966 of Time magazine's famous issue on London's reinvention as the new world centre of style. Forty years on, chapters by prominent authors reconsider the role played by designers, retail entrepreneurs, journalists, photographers and film-makers in promoting a new way of dressing that reverberated far beyond the British capital. Illustrated with stunning new shots of key pieces from the V&A's dress collection, alongside contemporary photographs, posters and other ephemera, the book relates the clothes to the rapidly changing social context of the times, arguing for the central role played by fashion in the brave new world of Sixties pop culture.

A nostalgic romp through the sixties that changed everyones lives forever, Mods, Minis, and Madmen presents a story of remarkable achievement during the twentieth centurys most significant cultural reboot. It celebrates a wondrous age drugged by the can-do attitude of youth. Revolutionary London was the birthplace of the boutique, and Mary Quant introduced the mini-skirtnamed after a car. John Stephen introduced heart-racing male boutiques on Kings Road that soon carved out a global niche. Lesley Hornby also known as Twiggy, the Cockney dolly birdstrutted her popsicle legs while touting mini-fashions. East Londoner Vidal Sassoon gave new life to tousled hair with a look that is still with us today. And of course, British sounds, led by the Beatles, hammered the charts in every country able to tune in. The lyrics spoke to us and seemed to sympathize with our turmoil, revealing an honest understanding of life as it would be, up to the age of sixty-four. It was a booster shot that pumped up everyone living in the sixties, and their tales would be told decades later. Mods, Minis, and Madmen is the tale of a writer and his disciples from the New World arriving in the old, just as the explosion was about to take place.

Swinging City written by Simon Rycroft and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-09 with History categories.

This book works with two contrasting imaginings of 1960s London: the one of the excess and comic vacuousness of Swinging London, the other of the radical and experimental cultural politics generated by the city's counterculture. The connections between these two scenes are mapped looking firstly at the spectacular events that shaped post-war London, then at the modernist physical and social reconstruction of the city alongside artistic experiments such as Pop and Op Art. Making extensive use of London's underground press the book then explores the replacement of this seemingly materialistic image with the counterculture of underground London from the mid-1960s. Swinging City develops the argument that these disparate threads cohere around a shared cosmology associated with a new understanding of nature which differently positioned humanity and technology. The book tracks a moment in the historical geography of London during which the city asserts itself as a post-imperial global city. Swinging London it argues, emerged as the product of this recapitalisation, by absorbing avant-garde developments from the provinces and a range of transnational, mainly transatlantic, influences.
