Comparative Poetics written by Earl Roy Miner and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-10-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

"Comparative literature," Earl Miner writes, "clearly involves something more than comparing two great German poets, and something different from a Chinese studying French literature or a Russian studying Italian literature." But what would a true intercultural poetics be? This work proposes various ways to "study something other than what are, all things considered, the short and simple annals of one cultural parish at one historic moment." The first developed account of theories of literature from an intercultural standpoint, the book shows that an "originative" or "foundational" poetics develops in cultures with explicit poetics when critics define the nature and conditions of literature in terms of the then most esteemed genredrama, lyric, or narrative. Earl Miner demonstrates that these definitions and inferences from them constitute useful bases for comparative poetics.

Cuban Currency written by Esther Katheryn Whitfield and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, during an economic crisis termed its “special period in times of peace,” Cuba began to court the capitalist world for the first time since its 1959 revolution. With the U.S. dollar instated as domestic currency, the island seemed suddenly accessible to foreign consumers, and their interest in its culture boomed. Cuban Currency is the first book to address the effects on Cuban literature of the country’s spectacular opening to foreign markets that marked the end of the twentieth century. Based on interviews and archival research in Havana, Esther Whitfield argues that writers have both challenged and profited from new transnational markets for their work, with far-reaching literary and ideological implications. Whitfield examines money and cross-cultural economic relations as they are inscribed in Cuban fiction. Exploring the work of Zo Valds, Pedro Juan Gutirrez, Antonio Jos Ponte and others, she draws out writers’ engagements with the troublesome commodification of Cuban identity. Confronting the tourist and publishing industries’ roles in the transformation of the Cuban revolution into commercial capital, Whitfield identifies a body of fiction peculiarly attuned to the material and political challenges of the “special period.” Esther Whitfield is assistant professor of comparative literature at Brown University.

Poetry. Translated from the Spanish by Daniel Borzutzky. First introduced to a U.S. audience by Cecilia Vicuna in 4 Mapuche Poets, Jaime Luis Huenun has become best-known through Daniel Borzutzky's vivid, memorable translations. In these recent poems--published in 2001 in Chile--Huenun invents a setting influenced by Melville's vivid scenarios, Coleridge's languid morbidity, andGeorge Trakl's silences and darkening seas. Borzutzky's English version is as haunted, brooding, and terrific as the original--Forrest Gander. PORT TRAKL is a world whose characters do not know which world they belong to, and which world they want to belong to; and as they attempt to depart one state of exile and enter into another, we get the sense that they will always be caught between worlds: between the real and the imaginary, between speech and silence, between poetry and the impossibility of hope--Daniel Borzutzky.

Discovered by the Theosophist as a boy in India, he was groomed by them as the new Messiah, a role he rejected when he set out independently on his own spiritual quest. Travelling the world, lecturing and teaching, he acquired an enormous following, including many eminent statesmen and intellectuals. As one of Krishnamurti’s closest friends and devotees, Mary Lutyens is uniquely qualified to write his biography. Indeed, she has written three previous volumes on him, but only after his death in 1986 did she feel able to produce this book, bringing the life and philosophy of this fascinating and complex man into true perspective.

After a while, finding that nothing more happened, she decided on going into the garden at once; but, alas for poor Alice! when she got to the door, she found she had forgotten the little golden key, and when she went back to the table for it, she found she could not possibly reach it: she could see it quite plainly through the glass, and she tried her best to climb up one of the legs of the table, but it was too slippery; and when she had tired herself out with trying, the poor little thing sat down and cried. The Temptation Of The Impossible written by Mario Vargas Llosa and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

It was one of the most popular novels of the nineteenth century and Tolstoy called it "the greatest of all novels." Yet today Victor Hugo's Les Misérables is neglected by readers and undervalued by critics. In The Temptation of the Impossible, one of the world's great novelists, Mario Vargas Llosa, helps us to appreciate the incredible ambition, power, and beauty of Hugo's masterpiece and, in the process, presents a humane vision of fiction as an alternative reality that can help us imagine a different and better world. Hugo, Vargas Llosa says, had at least two goals in Les Misérables--to create a complete fictional world and, through it, to change the real world. Despite the impossibility of these aims, Hugo makes them infectious, sweeping up the reader with his energy and linguistic and narrative skill. Les Misérables, Vargas Llosa argues, embodies a utopian vision of literature--the idea that literature can not only give us a supreme experience of beauty, but also make us more virtuous citizens, and even grant us a glimpse of the "afterlife, the immortal soul, God." If Hugo's aspiration to transform individual and social life through literature now seems innocent, Vargas Llosa says, it is still a powerful ideal that great novels like Les Misérables can persuade us is true.
