In der deutschen Technikgeschichtsschreibung ist die Biographieforschung im Gegen satz zu anderen historischen und sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen ein Desiderat. Biographien tiber Techniker sind haufig einem stark personenzentrierten Blickwinkel verhaftet und leisten nur selten die Einordnung in einen technik-, industrie-, gesell schafts- und kulturhistorischen GesamtprozeB. Einschlfigige Bibliographien nennen schwerpunktmfiJ3ig Autobiographien und Biographien einiger weniger beriihrnter Techniker und Ingenieure. Gleichzeitig dominieren populfire Biographien, die nicht immer wissenschaftlichen Anspriichen genilgen. Hinzu kommt, daB in den letzten Jahrzehnten von Seiten der Sozialwissenschaften die Rolle der Personlichkeit in der Geschichte zugunsten struktureller Untersuchungen zeitweise in den Hintergrund gedrfiugt wurde. Immerhin lfiBt sich seit der Mitte der 1980er Jahre rur die Ge schichtswissenschaft allgemein ein deutlich verstfirktes Interesse an der Biographik konstatieren. Dieses konjunkturelle Hoch der Biographik lfiJ3t sich im Bereich der deutschen Technikgeschichtsschreibung hOchstens bei populfiren Biographien erkennen. Wissen schaftlich wirklich fundierte Biographien sind in den letzten Jahren nicht erschienen. Das Grundproblem scheint zu sein, daB ein Methodendiskurs tiber das historische Individuum und tiber die Funktion der Biographie in der Technikgeschichte bisher kaum stattgefunden hat.

Networks of Modernity: Germany in the Age of the Telegraph, 1830-1880 offers a fresh perspective on the history of Germany by investigating the origins and impact of the 'communications revolution' that transformed state and society during the nineteenth century. It focuses upon the period 1830-1880, exploring the interactions between the many different actors who developed, administered, and used one of the most important technologies of the period-the electric telegraph. It reveals the channels through which scientific and technical knowledge circulated across Central Europe during the 1830s and 1840s, stimulating both collaboration and confrontation between the scientists, technicians, businessmen, and bureaucrats involved in bringing the telegraph to life. It highlights the technology's impact upon the conduct of trade, finance, news distribution, and government in the tumultuous decades that witnessed the 1848 revolutions, the wars of unification, and the establishment of the Kaiserreich in 1871.
