Attraverso questa ricerca si è cercato di fornire un’interpretazione della fotografia come fenomeno sociale, dal momento che essa fa parte integrante della vita quotidiana e sociale, ed è il mezzo di espressione tipico di una società tendenzialmente razionalistica, fondata su una gerarchia di professioni e di strati sociali. La fotografia è per la società contemporanea uno strumento di prim’ordine soprattutto per la sua capacità di riprodurre la realtà, capacità che la fa apparire, almeno in prima istanza, come il procedimento di riproduzione più fedele e più imparziale della vita sociale, anche se – come si vedrà – questa esattezza riproduttiva non può prescindere dai punti di vista e dalle ideologie dei soggetti che riprendono le immagini, in una sorta di gioco infinito di rimandi fra tecnica e identità, immaginazione e realtà. Giovanna Di Lauro è laureata in Comunicazione pubblica e d'impresa presso la facoltà di Scienze Politiche dell'Università degli Studi di Milano. Ha studiato inoltre Management della comunicazione socale, politica e istituzionale presso la Libera Università di Lingue e Comunicazione IULM.

Il Dipartimento di Scienze Documentarie, Linguistico-Filologiche e Geografiche della Sapienza, Università di Roma, annovera tra il proprio patrimonio documentario un fondo fotografico composto da circa 5.000 lastre in vetro di notevole interesse per la ricerca in campo geografico. Le lastre sono databili tra la ine del 1800 e l’inizio del 1900, e sono state raccolte negli anni nell’ambito dell’attività scientifica e didattica dei docenti attivi nell’allora Istituto di Geografia. Attraverso il recupero del materiale visuale si sta portando avanti un progetto che consentirà di accrescere la consapevolezza e le conoscenze geografiche per mezzo di un linguaggio ulteriore e complementare al testo e alla parola: il linguaggio della visual geography che apre nuovi processi e meccanismi di percezione cognitiva. Il presente volume, che si presenta come un primo viaggio virtuale attraverso le immagini, raccoglie alcune delle lastre che hanno come oggetto fatti e fenomeni geografici che interessano l’Europa.
