A significant contribution to the history of the political life and culture of the later medieval aristocracy. MAURICE KEEN Orders of lay knights - the most famous of which are those of the Garter and the Golden Fleece - were founded at some time between 1325 and 1470 in almost every kingdom of Western Christendom, and played an important part in the life of the court. Jonathan Boulton defines the "monarchical" orders as those with corporate statutes which attached the presidential office to the crown of the princely founder, or made it hereditary in his house. Modelled eitherdirectly or indirectly on the fictional society of the Round Table, they incorporated varying numbers of elements borrowed from the older religious orders of knighthood and from contemporary institutions. This study explores the nature and history of thirteen orders, and reveals them as not only an ingenious supplement to (or replacement for) the feudo-vassalic ties that still bound the leading members of the nobility to their sovereign, but also as the most important institutional embodiments of the secular ideals of chivalry that were at the heart of the international court culture of the age. JONATHAN BOULTON teaches at the University of Notre Dame.

The Art Of The Renaissance In Eastern Europe written by Jan Białostocki and has been published by Ithaca, N.Y. : Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1976 with Art categories.

"Little has been written about the influence of Italian Renaissance art in eastern Europe, even though the Florentine artists who were invited to Buda or Cracow brought with them a more refined and more original form of their art than the Lombards took to France and Germany. This handsome volume, which contains more than 350 illustrations, describes how Hungary, Bohemia, and Poland succumbed to the irrepressible new style. Concerned primarily with architecture, sculpture, and architectural decoration, Professor Białostocki concentrates on the direct impact of Tuscan and North Italian artists known to have worked in various eastern European cities and courts. Taking a functionalist approach, he considers the historical background of patronage and humanism, and he discusses the most typical artistic projects of the time: the castle, the chapel, the tomb, and the town. His concluding chapter deals with the period when late Renaissance, mannerism, and early baroque coexisted to form a hybrid style. A comprehensive bibliography offers previously uncollected material in several eastern European languages. An outstanding contribution to Renaissance studies, this book should not only encourage the exploration of new areas of comparative study but also make enlightening reading for nonexperts interested in the art of the Renaissance." --

Memory is a subject that recently has attracted many scholars and readers not only in the general historical sciences, but also in the special field of art history. However, in this book, in which more than 130 papers given at the XXIXth International Congress of the History of Art (Amsterdam) 1996 have been compiled, Memory is also juxtaposed to its counterpart, Oblivion, thus generating extra excitement in the exchange of ideas. The papers are presented in eleven sections, each of which is devoted to a different aspect of memory and oblivion, ranging from purely material aspects of preservation, to social phenomena with regard to art collecting, from the memory of the art historian to workshop practices, from art in antiquity, to the newest media, from Buddhist iconography to the Berlin Wall. The book addresses readers in the field of history, history of art and psychology.

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) traversed a long route from a boy in the Jewish Pale of Settlement, to a commissar of art in revolutionary Russia, to the position of a world-famous French artist. This book presents for the first time a comprehensive collection of Chagall's public statements on art and culture. The documents and interviews shed light on his rich, versatile, and enigmatic art from within his own mental world. The book raises the problems of a multi-cultural artist with several intersecting identities and the tensions between modernist form and cultural representation in twentieth-century art. It reveals the travails and achievements of his life as a Jew in the twentieth century and his perennial concerns with Jewish identity and destiny, Yiddish literature, and the state of Israel. This collection includes annotations and introductions of the Chagall texts by the renowned scholar Benjamin Harshav that elucidate the texts and convey the changing cultural contexts of Chagall's life. Also featured is the translation by Benjamin and Barbara Harshav of the first book about Chagall's work, the 1918 Russian The Art of Marc Chagall.

Colours and Years, which came out in 1912, explores the complexities facing different generations of these new women and catapulted her to success. Based on the technique of the talking head, it reveals not only the character of the writer herself, her background and history, with special emphasis on her relationship to her mother, but life as it was lived just before the First World War in the small Hungarian town of Nagykároly. The poet Endre Ady's words stand as fitting tribute to her even today: 'Let us rejoice in Margit Kaffka because she proves the triumph of Hungarian feminism... She is a strong person, an artist with an assured future: no criticism can hinder her true desting, the path marked as her own'. --
