Tennessee History written by Carroll Van West and has been published by Univ Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

This volume presents a variety of fresh perspectives on the peoples, periods, and major events of Tennessee history. Featuring contributions by both established historians and rising young scholars, the twenty essays contained here explore new avenues of research and interpretation while considering the forces that have shaped society and culture in the Volunteer State over the past two hundred years. As editor Carroll Van West points out, four major themes link the chapters in this collection. First, this is a "people's history" in which the contributions and interactions of the state's diverse groups--from Native Americans to Civil War generals, from women to African Americans, from rural reformers to the three presidents who began their careers in Tennessee--create a shared narrative. A second major theme concerns the ways in which economic change, both in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, has affected Tennessee politics. The interplay among reform, race, and class, especially in such twentieth-century movements as Progressivism and civil rights, forms a third theme among the essays. Finally, there is the theme of war and its social impact: this volume considers not only the momentous effects of the Civil War but those of the Second World War, particularly on the homefront. Drawn from the pages of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, these essays offer a well-balanced look at the state's vibrant past. The book will prove an invaluable resource for teachers, students, researchers, and general readers. The Editor: Carroll Van West, who teaches at Middle Tennessee State University, is senior editor of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly and editor-in-chief of the forthcoming Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture. He is the author, most recently, of Tennessee's Historic Landscapes. The Contributors: Elizabeth Fortson Arroyo, Jonathan M. Atkins, Fred Arthur Bailey, Paul K. Conkin, Wayne Cutler, W. Calvin Dickinson, John R. Finger, Cynthia G. Fleming, Kenneth W. Goings, Dewey W. Grantham, Caneta S. Hankins, Paul Harvey, Mary S. Hoffschwelle, Patricia Blake Howard, Connie L. Lester, James L. “A superb guide to 400 statues, columns, reliefs, and other components of the state’s commemorative landscape.” —Gary W. Gallagher, author of The Union War Throughout Tennessee, Civil War monuments stand tall across the landscape, from Chattanooga to Memphis, and recall important events and figures within the Volunteer State’s military history. In Tennessee Civil War Monuments, Timothy S. Sedore reveals the state’s history-laden landscape through the lens of its many lasting monuments. War monuments have been cropping up since the beginning of the commemoration movement in 1863, and Tennessee is now home to four hundred memorials. Not only does Sedore provide commentary for every monument—its history and aesthetic panache—he also explores the relationships that Tennessee natives have with these historic landmarks. A detailed exploration of the monuments that enrich this Civil War landscape, Sedore’s Tennessee Civil War Monuments is a guide to Tennessee’s spirit and heritage.

A History Of The Tennessee Supreme Court written by and has been published by Univ. of Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with History categories.

In this first comprehensive history of the Tennessee Supreme Court, seven leading scholars explore the role played by the Court in the social, economic, and political life of the state. Charting the evolution and organization of the Court (and its predecessor, the Superior Court of Law and Equity), the authors also assess the work of the Court within the larger context of the legal history of the South. Arranged chronologically, this volume covers the period from statehood in 1796 through the judicial election of 1998 and traces the range of contentious issues the Court has faced, including slavery, Reconstruction, economic rights, the regulation of business, and race and gender relations. The authors also outline the Court's relationship with the Supreme Court of the United States and chronicle the achievements of the Court in public and private law, state constitutional law, property law, criminal justice, and family law. The central themes that emerge include the nature of federalism, the search for judicial independence, and the practice of judicial review. As the authors demonstrate, the work of the Tennessee Supreme Court highlights the importance of state courts to the federal system and illuminates the interplay between regionalism and national norms in shaping a state's legal culture. Indeed, as mediator of conflicts between traditional southern values and national economic and social trends, the Court has generally, if sometimes belatedly, adopted national legal standards. Further, while the Court has tended to defer to the state's legislative decision-making process, it has on occasion assumed a more activist role in order to assert individual rights for Tennessee's citizens. Sponsored by the Tennessee Supreme Court Historical Society, this book is written for anyone interested in Tennessee history in general or legal history in particular. Appendixes include a comprehensive table of cases and biographical information about all the Court's judges. The Editor: James W. Ely Jr. is Milton R. Underwood Professor of Law and professor of history at Vanderbilt University. His books include The Chief Justiceship of Melville W. Fuller, 1888-1910 and The Guardian of Every Other Right: A Constitutional History of Property Rights. He is also the series editor of the six-volume Property Rights in American History.

The Army of Tennessee was officially designated November 20, 1862. But that was not the beginning of the Confederate main fighting force in the Civil War's Western Theater. Before that date it was known as the Army of Mississippi (or the Army of the West), a command organized on March 5, with its area of operations between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains. That army was formed of the Army of Central Kentucky, the Army of Louisiana and elements of the Army of Pensacola, following the Confederate disaster at Fort Donelson. The force was led by a succession of commoners--P.G.T. Beauregard, Albert Sydney Johnston and Braxton Bragg--and had a series of defeats, from Shiloh to Corinth to Perryville, before winning a spectacular victory at Chickamauga. Based on the Official Records, this book details the often neglected army's organization, strength and casualties during its three year history.
