Kebahagiaan sejati (hakiki) dalam pandangan Aquinas memang tidak bisa dicapai di dunia ini, dan baru bisa dirasakan setelah manusia mengalami kematian dan kebahagiaan sejati itulah pemberian (anugerah) Tuhan yang berdaulat. Melalui pendidikan spiritual dan moral inilah pemikiran Aquinas berhasil penulis integrasikan dengan disiplin keilmuan Islam dan kontribusinya terhadap kondisi sosial, moral dan spiritual masyarakat abad global. Thomas Aquinas (1124-1274) tampil sebagai tokoh terdepan yang menggagas esensi politik dan hukum pada zamannya. Baik politik maupun hukum dalam Thomas memiliki satu tujuan yang disebut sebagai bonum commune atau kebaikan bersama. Hal itu dikarenakan politik dan hukum selalu berkaitan dengan suatu societas, di mana kita juga ambil bagian di dalamnya. Titik tolak teorinya tentang politik berangkat dari ide dasar manusia sebagai zõon politikón. Selanjutnya, hukum dalam pandangan Thomas tidak dilihat melulu sebagai suatu kekuatan untuk menghukum tetapi dalam artinya yang terdalam sebagai suatu perintah akal budi (ordo rationis). Akal budi adalah aturan dan ukuran (regula et mensura) tindakan manusia. Kebaikan yang menjadi akhir dari hukum berkaitan dengan kebenaran. Kebaikan itu haruslah kebaikan yang benar, bukan hanya kelihatannya baik. Inilah wilayah kerja hukum terutama hukum kodrat sebagai perintah akal budi praktis. Hukum ini menjadi dasar dari semua hukum positif. Hukum positif yang berlawanan dengan hukum kodrat bukanlah hukum dalam arti yang sesungguhnya. “Lakukan yang baik, tolaklah yang jahat” menjadi prinsipnya yang utama. Prinsip ini mendesak manusia untuk mengingini, mencari dan mengejar kebaikan, serta menjauhi kejahatan. Dengan hal ini berarti kejahatan tidak pernah dipandang sebagai kebaikan dalam waktu yang sama. Ini adalah prinsip non-kontradiksi dalam ranah etika. Pembunuhan, apa pun bentuknya, selalu merupakan kejahatan dan tidak pernah dilihat sebagai suatu kebaikan dalam waktu sama. Dalam hal ini hukum kodrat menjadi dasar dari etika.
