Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir, and Margaret Thatcher were all described at various times as the "only man" in their respective cabinets - a reference to their tough, controlling behaviour. What explains this type of leadership style? In Women in Power, Blema Steinberg describes the role that personality traits played in shaping the ways in which these three women governed. For each of her subjects, Steinberg provides a personality profile based on biographical information, an analysis of the patterns that comprise the personality profile using psychodynamic insights, and an examination of the relationship between personality and leadership style through an exploration of various aspects of political life - motivation, relations with the cabinet, the caucus, the opposition, the media, and the public. By bringing together some of the best work in psychological leadership studies and conventional personality assessments, Women in Power makes a significant contribution to the study of political leadership and the advancement of personality-in-leadership modelling.

The first ever female private secretary to any British Prime Minister, Caroline Slocock had a front-row seat for the final eighteen months of Margaret Thatcher's premiership. A left-wing feminist, Slocock was no natural ally and yet she became fascinated by the woman behind the Iron Lady façade and by how she dealt with a world dominated by men. As events led inexorably to Thatcher's downfall, Slocock observed the vulnerabilities and contradictions of the woman considered by many to be the ultimate anti-feminist, and witnessed the astonishing way in which she was brought down by her closest political allies. In this vivid first-hand account, Slocock reflects on the challenges women still face in public life and concludes that it's time to rewrite how we portray female leaders. A remarkable political and personal memoir, People Like Us charts the dying days of Thatcher's No. 10 and reflects on women and power, then and now.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: 1,7, University of Göttingen (Sozialwissenschaften), course: Women, Politics and Power, language: English, abstract: The number of women in executive positions is increasing. Feminist literature tried to analyse the way they get to power and how their politics support women. Margaret Thatcher as the first female Prime Minister in Britain and her agendas evoked a certain ambivalence. The goal was a globally competitive Britain through a liberal market and this affected the majority of women. This paper is going to reflect published article and books concerning the Thatcherism and women in the changing British society. Gender and class are determining factors for every individual and their dependancy on the family, the work and the state. Thatcher's policies were not directed at women, but they are mostly affected by cuts in welfare state and this caused collateral damage.

This case study showcases the complexity for female leaders in navigating a balance between gender roles, communication, and leadership. Through a comparison of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, the double-bind phenomenon is explored with two charismatic world leaders with differing media portrayals. In broad terms, the case study reflects how gender, media portrayals and bias influence our perceptions of leaders across organizations and industries with particular emphasis on challenges women leaders face such as being held to higher standards than their male counterparts and not being viewed as "tough" enough for business or politics.

Her areas of interest include: international politics, defence and strategic studies, comparative politics and international law. Since the Second World War, there have been very few women politicians to have come to lead their nations and dominate the world politics. Out of them, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meir are regarded as powerful women leaders of the world. These three Premiers were the first and only women leaders to have assumed political leadership in their respective countries till date. They were universally recognised as Iron Ladies because of their command and control over their respective governments, their conviction mindset and their capability to transform and implement their visions and ideas into practical policies. They were surrounded by male colleagues and there was hardly any woman in their respective Cabinets or governments; nor did they portray themselves as representatives of womenfolk. Also, their policies bore no reflection of women-friendly approaches; neither were they supporters of womens rights, nor did they encourage womens participation in politics or promote womens empowerment. They were successful in maintaining domestic peace and resisted external aggressions with strong hands, for which, they were universally recognised as tough leaders and were personified with their respective countries as well. This book intends to look at their electoral politics, modes of functioning and the power-sharing patterns, makes a comparative study of the nature of their leadership, along with the personal and institutional factors in their access to power, mitigating domestic discontents as well as their individual roles in the Indo Pak War of 1971, the Falklands Island dispute of 1982 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
