In 1799, one hundred years before the Wright Brothers' historic flights at Kitty Hawk, Sir George Cayley had engraved, on a silver disc about the size of a British shilling, both the design for an airplane and the earliest recorded description of the forces by which a wing can fly. Through his work Cayley was the first to recognize the two opponent-paired forces of flight: weight and lift, thrust and drag. These discoveries culminated in the invention of the first practical airplanes. Cayley, his grandson John, and the ever supportive engineer Mr. Vick formed a team that would finally conquer the air. Aged seventy-five, Cayley and his little group developed a series of advanced models, and in 1849 they finally flew a full-sized glider with a crew consisting of a ten-year-old boy. Shortly before the his eightieth birthday, Cayley would finally build the machine that launched the world's first heavier-than-air aviator. Within less than a generation of his death, Cayley's name would be virtually forgotten. The "father of aviation" would remain unknown to all but a tiny group who followed his pioneering work. In this compelling account, Richard Dee tells the story of this remarkable man and his remarkable time. Dee's biography of Cayley allows him to combine his scientific and historical knowledge of aviation to produce an accessible and highly readable account of one of aviation's unsung heroes.

A Vietnamese Refugee, a Viral Video, and the United Airlines Scandal That Started It All “His refusal to give up his seat on a United Airlines flight, and the ensuing assault he suffered, is emblematic of how far we, the people, still have to travel to create a world with liberty and justice for all.” —Marlena Fiol, PhD, globally recognized scholar and speaker and author of Nothing Bad Between Us Dr. David Dao was dragged off United Express Flight 3411 on April 9, 2017 after refusing to give up his seat. In the tradition of contemporary immigrant stories comes a personal narrative of the many small but significant acts of racial discrimination faced on the way to the American Dream. The unseen effects of discrimination. The United Airlines scandal of 2017 garnered over a million views on YouTube. A result of an overbooking overlook, security officials forcibly removed Dr. Dao after refusing to give up his seat. He awoke in the hospital to a concussion, a broken nose, several broken teeth, and worldwide attention. Things aren’t always fair for an immigrant, but according to Dr. Dao, you can prevail if you firmly advocate for yourself. A response to a lifetime of oppressive acts. Why was Dr. Dao so adamant on his right to a seat? His entire life had led to that moment. A Vietnamese refugee, he fled his home country during the fall of Saigon. He was stranded in the Indian Ocean, immigrated to the United States, enrolled in medical school for a second time, built a practice, and started a family-all the while battling the effects of discrimination and what he had to embrace as a result. This is his story. If you are moved by immigrant stories, or books like America for Americans, Minor Feelings, How to Be an Antiracist, or The Making of Asian America, then you’ll want to read Dr. David Dao's story, Dragged Off.

If there was ever a man who was born to fly, it is John M. Billings. He took his first plane ride in 1926, began taking piloting lessons in 1938, and joined the US Army Air Force in July 1942. After training he was assigned to fly Consolidated B-24 Liberator long-range bombers. He joined the 825th Bombardment Squadron of the 484th Bombardment Group. After flying fifteen daylight strategic bombing missions, Billings was selected for assignment to the 885th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) (Special). As its designation suggests, the 885th was no regular bombing unit. The 885th specialized in flying top secret, low-altitude missions at night in support of the clandestine operations of the OSS and the Special Operations Executive. The unit’s covert missions included parachuting OSS and SOE agents and supplies deep inside German territory. The most eventful and dangerous of Billings’ thirty-nine secret missions with the 885th was his assignment in February 1945 to clandestinely insert a three-man OSS team, code-named Greenup, into Austria. The drop zone selected for the Greenup insertion was located on a glacier in a valley surrounded by mountains in the middle of the snow-covered Alps. Billings and his crew finally found the weather in the Alps clear enough to spot the drop zone, slip their unwieldy B-24 between the mountain peaks and descend to an altitude just a few hundred feet above the moonlit snow. On Billings’ signal, the OSS agents parachuted right on target. The insertion of this OSS team was the inspiration for the feature film Inglorious Bastards. However, Brad Pitt’s vengeful character was far removed from the leader of the Greenup team, Fred Mayer, who achieved success by infiltrating enemy ranks to gain vital intelligence. After the war, John Billings flew with Trans World Airlines and Eastern Airlines. He also flew more than 300 ‘Angel Flight’ airlift missions which involve the specialized aerial transportation of critically ill medical patients. This is one man’s story of a remarkable lifetime of flying, both in peace and in war.

On airline security: ‘We are not going to die at the hands of toiletries.’On popularity: ‘I don’t give a shite if nobody likes me.’On customer service: ‘Are we going to apologise if something goes wrong? No, we’re f***ing not.’Refunds? ‘You can’t have one, so f*** off’. Airport operators? ‘Overcharging rapists’. The European Commission? ‘Communists’. Travel agents? ‘Fuckers’. Some might call it radical, ruthless business logic; others, the foulmouthed abuse of a shameless gobshite. Whatever: Michael O’Leary, the shrinking violet who is Chief Executive of the awesomely successful low-cost airline Ryanair, has made it his business to offer you his opinion on everything, even if it often makes you wish you hadn’t asked. Now, here is the very baddest of his collected wit and wisdom, on everything from the possibility of charging passengers for going to the loo on his planes to his Aunty-f***ing-Mavis. We may hate him when we end up being charged forty quid for a flight we thought we were getting for a penny, but who can fail to be mesmerised, enlightened or just laugh out loud at some of the stuff that issues relentlessly from the man’s lips?Paul Kilduff is the author of the bestselling Ruinair (2008) and four novels. He lives in Ireland.

A single mom finds her romantic life is up in the air-and getting turbulent-in this "intelligent, hard-nosed comedy" (The Observer). Pamela Pryor is free. Her son has, at last, left home. Her business is thriving. But she's feeling strangely restless, and there's the small matter of the missing Mr. Right. There have been three significant men in her life: her ex-husband, Peter; Douglas, the style guru turned perfect post-divorce romance; and Dean, the younger man as wildly handsome as he is completely inappropriate. All three are suddenly back in Pamela's life and, as luck and air travel would have it, about to board the same flight. Pamela felt she was ready for a new man, but not three, not now ... and not on one plane. "An ingenious story-line affording ample scope for the sly humor at which Mavis Cheek excels."--The Observer "A marvellous writer whose characters are beautifully drawn, whose observations on the absurd behavior of the middle aged invariably hit the mark and who makes you laugh out loud."--Daily Mail.
