Bill Marks escorts the reader along his thirty year journey as a trial lawyer to reveal "The Other Side of the Law." This is the human side that is rarely seen or disclosed, where gut-wrenching decisions are made by lawyers, clients and judges as they work their way through the legal system. Each of the thirty chapters represents a case which brings insight of gripping and agonizing decisions that must be made, many of which have life changing consequences. Trial lawyers ask questions, search for facts, and seek honest answers in their search for the truth as they strive to obtain justice, equity and fairness for their clients. Marks goes beyond the legal consequences in describing cases where his heart and the heart of his clients were touched by the legal system. Bill Marks received a B. S. degree from the College of Business and a Juris Doctor degree from the College of Law at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee; an M. A. degree from Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky. He was granted a law license by The Tennessee Supreme Court in 1967 and is a former Assistant District Attorney General for the State of Tennessee.

The Other Side Of Empire written by Andrew W. Devereux and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-15 with History categories.

Via rigorous study of the legal arguments Spain developed to justify its acts of war and conquest, The Other Side of Empire illuminates Spain's expansionary ventures in the Mediterranean in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Andrew Devereux proposes and explores an important yet hitherto unstudied connection between the different rationales that Spanish jurists and theologians developed in the Mediterranean and in the Americas. Devereux describes the ways in which Spaniards conceived of these two theatres of imperial ambition as complementary parts of a whole. At precisely the moment that Spain was establishing its first colonies in the Caribbean, the Crown directed a series of Old World conquests that encompassed the Kingdom of Naples, Navarre, and a string of presidios along the coast of North Africa. Projected conquests in the eastern Mediterranean never took place, but the Crown seriously contemplated assaults on Egypt, Greece, Turkey, and Palestine. The Other Side of Empire elucidates the relationship between the legal doctrines on which Spain based its expansionary claims in the Old World and the New. The Other Side of Empire vastly expands our understanding of the ways in which Spaniards, at the dawn of the early modern era, thought about religious and ethnic difference, and how this informed political thought on just war and empire. While focusing on imperial projects in the Mediterranean, it simultaneously presents a novel contextual background for understanding the origins of European colonialism in the Americas.

Many years ago In the Belly of the Beast was written by Jack Henry Abbott, a recurrent prisoner. He wrote about his experiences which led to his life of incarceration. He described his life in the belly of the beast, the beast being the penile system. The stories in this book are glimpses into that belly. It is a place populated by familiar and unfamiliar characters. The other side of the law is an interesting place. It is a place populated with individuals living lives in parallel with the free world. What is imperative to understand is these individuals share a world that may be totally dissimilar in its ways of living. In the end, though, there is a thread of humanity that binds us all together. Only a fine line separates us from the other side of the law.

THE MILLION COPY INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER 'If power is your ultimate goal, this is the book you need' The Times Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distils three thousand years of the history of power into forty-eight well-explicated laws. As attention-grabbing in its design as it is in its content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers. Some laws require prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), some stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"), and some the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"), but like it or not, all have applications in real-life situations. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissenger, P T Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded - or been victimised by - power, these laws will fascinate any reader interested in gaining, observing or defending against ultimate control.

However, unlike conventional legal theory, this volume seeks to provide an answer in terms of a general social theory: a methodology that answers this question in a manner applicable not only to law, but also to all the other complex and highly differentiated systems within modern society, such as politics, the economy, religion, the media, and education. This truly sociological approach offers profound insights into the relationships between law and all of these other social systems.
