The Pa-O, one of Burma's many ethnic minorities, engaged in a forty-year insurgency against the government of Burma which ended in a cease-fire in 1994. This is the first book on the Pa-O in English. Drawing upon historical accounts, contemporary writing, and personal interviews, the authors present the mythological and historical background of the Pa-O in Burma and Thailand. They recount the recent political history and focus on the experiences and difficulties of one village community that was forced to relocate ten times between 1978 and 1996. Interviews provide first-hadn evidence of the difficult conditions under which the Pa-O live in Burma and Thailand.

A collection of Pa'o literary and cultural journals. Many of these journals are published annually to commemorate regular events, such as Pa'o National Day; though, others were published following singular events, such as conferences or monastery dedications. They are aggreagated into this collection based on the unifying nature of the content, which is primarily literary and expressive in a broad, general sense of Pa'o culture. Poetry, narrative fiction, and essays represent the majority of the content across all of these texts. Due to the strong influence of Theravāda Buddhism in daily Pa'o life, a significant portion of the content also covers religious subject matter, though primarily from the lay perspective. A handful of the issues are directly produced and sponsored by monasteries, though these issues remain experiential rather than instructional in nature. The influence of Burmese language and Burmese editorial input wanes across time from the earliest issues to the most contemporary as local Pa'o political determination and economic independence grows. All of the publications communicate a stated goal of support and proliferation of Pa'o language content for the purpose of maintaining cultural identity and education in the Pa'o language. Many of the issues contain lists in the end matter of individual financial contributors to each of the publications.
