Eddy Chapman, a member of an elite unit of the United States Army, sits in the rain in modern day America recalling the hells and heavens of his Viet Nam experience where he and his two fellow soldiers where sent on a mission that went sour leading to his subsequent capture and torture at the hands of a sadistic North Vietnamese Colonel. As they were being transported North to the Hanoi Hilton they affect their escape and spend the next lifetime, it seemed, making their way to a friendly unit and freedom. Coming home to an ungrateful country he tries to find his place back into society. Never realizing the peace he sought from a government that doesn’t want him and a people that would rather ignore the plight of the veteran, he is thrust into the life of the homeless. Receiving help from a missionary for the homeless and an attorney who helps him in his battle, he regains his self-respect and once again continues the fight. But...it was not to be. The country, once again, turns its back on the veteran and his life is destroyed by the IRS losing everything he had. With the encouragement of a close friend that has been with him all along, he keeps up the good fight until he goes on a job interview that becomes the focal point of his destiny.

A comprehensive encyclopedia that describes the experiences of American veterans from the Revolutionary War to the present. From the American Revolution to today's conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Encyclopedia of the Veteran in America captures the experiences and lives of our nation's veterans in a comprehensive, unprecedented way. It is the first major reference work focused exclusively on an American soldier's view of military life during war and the often difficult return to civilian life and peacetime afterward. Encyclopedia of the Veteran in America comprises over 100 insightful entries that include major examinations of the American Revolution, Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Gulf, Afghan, and Iraq Wars, plus brief reviews of other conflicts. In addition, it highlights the specific experiences of POW, MIAs, and their families, as well as African Americans, women, and American Indian soldiers. Additional entries focus on key historic figures like Theodore Roosevelt and General Douglas MacArthur, veterans' organizations like the American Legion and the VFW, legislative initiatives, and the full range of memorials and monuments dedicated to our fighting men and women.

Excerpt from The Veteran: And His Pipe The demand for a second edition of this work allows no time for the correction of mere verbal errors. The essays herein con tained were written week by week during the year 1885, their char acter being determined by contemporaneous events. In a cursory review the author finds no reason to desire any substantial change. The convictions expressed in these pages have only been emphasized by subsequent events. Pascal Raines and Rans Whiting are types of the healthiest sentiment of the two great elements of yesterday. The sacrifice and heroism of the days of strife will have been worse than vain unless they shall teach wisdom, devotion to the right, an exalted sense of patriotic duty, and a righteous scorn of subterfuge, evasion and pretense in the direction of public affairs. Whatever may be the truth in regard to material things, civili zation is undoubtedly a revolution. Liberty is a plant whose petals open very slowly and whose perfect bloom the world has not yet seen. God gives us yesterday that we may make to-morrow better. The soldier who fought for Freedom and the Right did only his duty. He deserves no more credit than he who serves the country with like aspiration to-day. It is as an example of patriotic devotion, and not as a mere survivor of perilous times, that he deserves to be remembered. What he did may very well be forgotten. Why he did it is the priceless legacy he left for the betterment of tomorrow. W'henever the present fails to rise to thelevel of the past in patriotic aspiration, the future is in peril. Civil war in a republic is always the result of a lesson of patriotic purpose. The patriotism which saved the Union, if manifested before the outbreak of hostilities, would have made rebellion impossible. The apathy and indecision of the North, not less than the arrogance and aggressiveness of the South, were responsible for the bloody consequences. This is the lesson the story of yesterday's achievements should teach to every one of the controllers of to-morrow's destiny. The pages that lol low were written simply to enforce this thought.
