Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 31: March 1947 From the top third of the farms came 80 percent of the total pro duction, from the other two-thirds 20 percent. In other words, mil lion farms produced 144 billion dol lars worth of goods, roughly per farm. The remaining mil lion farms produced billion dol lars worth, or about $900 per farm. The bottom third of all farms had an average production of about $400 each and accounted for only 4 per cent oi the value of the total produc tion. The middle third had an aver age production oi about each and accounted for about 16 percent of the value of the total production. By 1945 the proportion dropped to about 9 per cent. The proportion of hired workers in the region went down a little from 1940 to 1945. The number of family workers, including owners, tenants, and croppers, dropped 6 percent in the same period. The number of croppers fell about 18 percent and hired workers 21 percent.
