Excerpt from The Animal Parasites of Man: A Handbook for Students and Medical Men Braun's work on Human Parasites is so well known and has been so much appreciated that it has already reached a third German edition. Thanks to the present publishers an English translation appears which is sure to be welcomed by the Anglo-Saxon race. The great importance of parasitology is becoming more marked every day. It is especially in warm climates that this subject is of such interest medically: but. nevertheless, the practitioner in temperate and cold regions is constantly brought face to face with some parasitic infestation. The rapid strides made in parasitology make it necessary that such works as this should be constantly revised. In this edition a considerable amount of fresh matter has been incorporated, bringing it up to date. The original text has been followed as closely as possible; additional matter is enclosed in brackets. The revision of the Protozoa, Cestodes and Nematodes has been undertaken by Dr. Sambon; the Trematodes, Arthropoda, &c., by myself. A large amount of fresh matter has been added to the Arthropoda especially dealing with Mosquitoes, Tsetse Flies, Ticks, and other disease-carriers. The translation has been made with much patience and skill by Miss Falcke, to whom the editors are much indebted for the trouble and time she spent over the work. Excerpt from Eleven Miscellaneous Papers on Animal Parasites Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith, and to recommend for publication as Bulletin No. 35 of this Bureau, the manuscripts of eleven miscellaneous articles on animal parasites. Three of the parasites mentioned are Asiatic and are likely to be found affecting some of the troops who have served in China or the Philippines. These three parasites are not familiar to American physicians in general, since they are not usually described in American text-books. One of the other parasites is the common vinegar eel, which is now reported as a parasite of man, and two parasites are discussed which are more or less problematic, but have been mentioned in many zoological and medical writings. While the work of this Bureau is primarily in the field of veterinary medicine, it is impossible entirely to avoid references to diseases which affect man. This is particularly the case with the animal parasites. Not only is it impossible to draw a sharp line between the parasites of man and those of the domesticated and wild animals, since the organisms in question are in many cases transmissible from one to the other, but as this is the only service in the Government which supports a laboratory devoted to a study of medical and veterinary zoology, we are constantly being called upon by the physicians of the country, the State boards of health, and the various departments of the Government for information or cooperation in this field of science. Yet under her seeming calm there is going on everywhere - in every pool, in every meadow, in every forest murder, pillage, starvation and suffering. Man Often considers himself exempt from this interminable struggle for existence. His superior intelligence has given him an insuperable advantage over the wild beasts which might otherwise prey upon him; his inventive genius defies the attacks of climate and the elements; his altruism, which is perhaps his greatest attribute, protects, to a great extent, the weak and poorly endowed individuals from the quick elimination which is the inevitable lot of the unfit in every other species of animal on the earth. Exempt as we are, to a certain extent, from these phases of the struggle for existence, we have not yet freed our selves from two other phases of it, war and disease. We have some reason for hoping that after the present world-wide con fiagration of war has burned itself out and its ashes, the flesh and bones of its countless victims, have disintegrated and disappeared from view, we may be able to free ourselves from the probability of ever again taking part in or witnessing such a spectacle.
