Fitzgerald's second novel, a devastating portrait of the excesses of the Jazz Age, is a largely autobiographical depiction of a glamorous, reckless Manhattan couple and their spectacular spiral into tragedy. Published on the heels of "This Side of Paradise," the story of the Harvard-educated aesthete Anthony Patch and his willful wife, Gloria, is propelled by Fitzgerald's intense romantic imagination and demonstrates an increased technical and emotional maturity. "The Beautiful and Damned" is at once a gripping morality tale, a rueful meditation on love, marriage, and money, and an acute social document. As Hortense Calisher observes in her Introduction, " Though Fitzgerald can entrance with stories so joyfully youthful they appear to be safe-- when he cuts himself, you will bleed."

The Beautiful and the Damned is F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel. It explores and portrays New York caf society and the American Eastern elite during the Jazz Age before and after "the Great War" and in the early 1920s. As in his other novels, Fitzgerald's characters in this novel are complex, especially with respect to marriage and intimacy. The work is generally considered to have drawn upon and be based on Fitzgerald's relationship and marriage with his wife Zelda Fitzgerald. The Beautiful and the Damned tells the story of Anthony Patch, a 1910s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune, and his courtship and relationship with his wife Gloria Gilbert. It describes his brief service in the Army during World War I, and the couple's post-war partying life in New York, and his later alcoholism. Gloria and Anthony's love story is much more than just a couple falling in love. Their story deals with the hardships of a relationship, especially when each character has a tendency to be selfish. Joanna Stolarek suggests, Fitzgerald draws on "Zelda, the object of the writer's literary passion." Toward the end of the novel, Fitzgerald sums up the plot and his intentions in writing it somewhat, even referencing his own first novel, when a financially successful writer friend tells Anthony: "You know these new novels make me tired. My God! Everywhere I go some silly girl asks me if I've read 'This Side of Paradise'. Are our girls really like that? If it's true to life, which I don't believe, the next generation is going to the dogs. I'm sick of all this shoddy realism. I think there's a place for the romanticist in literature."

The Beautiful and the Damned is F. Scott Fitzgerald's second book, published in 1922, which portrays the lives of a young, wealthy, and pleasure-seeking couple, Anthony and Gloria Patch. Anthony is heir to a massive fortune, and Gloria, a midwestern debutant, is marrying up: together they ritz it up like in classic Jazz Age style, dining and drinking wildly, going to shows, philosophizing with friends, and spending lavishly while waiting for Anthony Patch's grandfather to kick the bucket. At the novel's start, the Patch duo have it all together, and seem happy in their own solipsistic and nihilistic ways. But their prodigal ways soon get the best of them, and their lives begin to unravel. There is a list of tag-a-long friends who fill out the ensemble of this work: Anthony's BFF, Maury Noble; a writer friend named Richard Carmel; the glitzy Joseph Bloeckman; and the young temptress Muriel. These ancillary characters provide a backdrop for the downward spiral of Anthony and Gloria, which is, above all else, tragic. The Beautiful and the Damned follows on the heels of Fitzgerald's bestselling book This Side of Paradise; some have criticized his second work for being too blatant in its message: "find some purpose to your lives, you wastrels!" But it is a good read, and if you love Fitzgerald, it's and indispensable glance into the maturation of one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century.

The book is believed to be largely based on Fitzgerald's relationship and marriage with Zelda Fitzgerald.

The Beautiful and Damned tells the story of Anthony Patch, a 1910s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune, and his courtship and relationship with his wife Gloria Gilbert. It describes his brief service in the Army during World War I, and the couple's post-war partying life in New York, and his later alcoholism. Gloria and Anthony's love story is much more than just a couple falling in love. Their story deals with the hardships of a relationship, especially when each character has a tendency to be selfish. The way Gloria and Anthony are portrayed seems to draw on Fitzgerald's personal life with his wife. Zelda was a firecracker of a woman, and Scott was quite the party guy himself. As Joanna Stolarek suggests, Fitzgerald draws on "Zelda, the object of the writer's literary passion" (Stolarek et al 53). Considering that Fitzgerald uses his life with Zelda as a template for this novel, The Beautiful and Damned can be very telling of his personal life.
