Michael "Beau" Geste is the protagonist. The main narrator (among others) is his younger brother John. The three Geste brothers are a metaphor for the British upper class values of a time gone by, and "the decent thing to do" is the leitmotif of the trilogy. The Geste brothers are orphans and have been brought up by their aunt at Brandon Abbas. The rest of Beau's band are mainly Isobel, Claudia and Augustus. When a precious jewel known as the "Blue Water" goes missing, Beau leaves Britain to join the French Foreign Legion, followed by his brothers, Digby (his twin) and John. Beau Sabreur and Beau Ideal are sequel novels and Good Gestes is a collection of short tales mainly about the Geste brothers and their American friends Hank and Buddy. Percival Christopher Wren (1875-1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion. This book examines attitudes towards empire and the creation and perpetuation of a British world-view during the years 1834-1924. Besides focusing on the usual Victorian and Edwardian novelists and poets, surveys of popular culture and anti-empire views are also included. By adopting a longer chronological context, the high level of continuity in beliefs and actions throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is highlighted. As a result, the period is viewed as a dramatic episode in a much longer story.

This book contains a selection of English, Russian and German short poems with translations where appropriate. Some of the contents were put together in moments which I was able to snatch from a very busy and demanding career at the English Bar and some have been added after retirement. The translations are original translations by myself [to ensure that they really are original I have been totally resolute in restraining myself from reading any other verse translation]. Since I have made every effort to convey the literal meaning of each word it would not be correct to describe the translations as free translations'. It must however be understood that my overwhelming priority throughout has been to try to reproduce the rhythm and music of the original language and in order to achieve this it has occasionally been necessary to choose, without distorting the sense, a word or words which are not an exact translation of the original [often in the case of the Russian text this is because the Russian word contains more syllables than any literal English equivalent]. Very rarely the same approach has been taken in order to achieve a rhyme which in its context was considered to be more important than a literal translation. Thus for example in one of Bunin's poems the Russian word for knees' has been translated as feet'.

Beau Sabreur focuses on the adventures of Major Henri De Beaujolais, an officer in the French Foreign legion, known as the "Beau Sabreur", title given to him by his uncle, General de Beaujolais. When Henri and his legionary friends, Raoul de Redon and Dufour do not return in time to leave Algiers they end up in jail. The general sends Henry into the desert to learn the local customs with a mission to conclude the signing of a crucial peace treaty, during which he meets Mary Vanbrugh, an American journalist. A traitor, Becque attacks them... The novel provides a detailed and fairly authentic description of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion, which has led to suggestions that P. C. Wren himself served with the legion._x000D_ Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. A unique perspective on war and its impact. Poets have written about the experience of war since ancient times, but the young soldier poets of the First World War established war poetry as a literary genre. Leaving an indelible mark on literature, their poems offered a powerful insight into the human experience of conflict. This book explores the work of some of the most influential poets of the period – many of whom lost their lives in battle – including Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke, as well as lesser-known poets such as Australian Leon Gellert and Canadian John McCrae. Through their words, readers are transported to the trenches and battlefields of the First World War, and can glimpse the horror, trauma, and loss experienced by soldiers and civilians alike. Packed full of intriguing background information and including moving quotes from letters, poems and other sources, this book is a testament to the power of language to capture and convey the most profound of human experiences. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. From the poem In Flanders Fields, by Canadian poet John McRae who wrote it after presiding over the funeral of his friend who was killed during the Battle of Ypres in May 1915.
