Excerpt from The Goldsmith's Art in Ancient Mexico These observations at the beginning of this monograph on the use of gold in ancient Mexico must be borne in mind, so that we may not fall into the error of judging the civilization of the Mexican people by the well-known method to which we have re ferred. We cannot assign any definite age to the gold jewels about to be described, although most of them doubtless belong to the period shortly before the discovery of America. It does not follow, however, that gold was not known and used by these an cient tribes for many centuries. Excerpt from Mexico, Old and New: A Wonder-Land Mexico is an ancient land. Its history can be definitely traced to A. D. 640, and traditionally much farther back, perhaps, far beyond the Christian era. My aim has been to see present affairs as they exist, and be led to understand past things as they actually were. The physical, mental, moral, and religious have claimed my attention, and in judging of them, I have endeavored to be fair and just. Mexico, ancient and modem, is a marvelous country. The illustrations were taken by an accompanying friend, Benj. F. Freeman of Somerville, Mass., who 15 a professional artist and photographer. I know the pictures are true to life. My object has not been to make this an exhaustive work, but simply sketchy, cheery, instructive, and helpful to mind and heart. As it goes forth on its mission, should it prove to be such, abundant will be the reward of the Author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Montezuma and the Conquest of Mexico Whiie in the eastern hemisphere, he who imagined the possibility of reaching land beyond the mysterious atlantic, was deemed but a vis ionary dreamer, civilization had flourished, fallen and sprung up again in the western world. AI ready the wonderful ruins of an ancient American civilization had been overgrown by old forests, and the builders of them were forgotten by the people of Montezuma's day. While Columbus, ignorant of the extent of the globe, and of the great continent which lay between him and Asia, believed that he had but discovered a passage to the East Indies, more than one American monarch was extending and consolidating a king dom which bade fair to last for ages. The gentle savages of the West Indian Archipelago were soon subjugated by the Spanish sword and were easily ground by cruel Spanishavarice, but the great Gulf of Mexico hid for a time the mainland from the settlements upon the Islands. Excerpt from The History of Ancient Mexico, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Foundation of That Empire to Its Destruction by the Spaniards II. This language wants the consonants, B, D, F, G, R, and S, and abounds with L, X, T, Z, Tl, Tz: but though the letter L is very frequently used, it never occurs at the commencement of a word. No words, except some vocatives, have an acute termination; almost all have the nult syllable long; the aspirates moderate and sot); and the pro nunciation is never, necessarily, nasal. Notwith standing the curtailment of the alphabet, the lan guage is copious, polished, and expressive; and many Europeans who have mastered its idioms, have preferred it above the Greek; certainly not without reason when, its plastic genius is con sidered. Its copiousness is apparent, from the natural history of Hernandez, who for a descrip tion of twelve hundred plants, more than two hun dred Species of birds, a great number of quadru peds, reptiles, insects, and minerals, found in it distinct proper names. Nor was it less rich in terms for metaphysical ideas. The highest myste ries_of religion are expressed in it without the aid Of foreign Words.
