Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of James Thomson The chief want hitherto felt by students of the poetry of Thomson has been a variorum edition of The Seasons. This I have endeavoured to supply in the present edition. The first edition of Winter appeared in March, 1726, and consisted of only 405 lines. The second, published in the following June, contained many variations, and increased the original text by 58 lines. I give a reprint of the first Winter, accompanying it with the variations of the second. Three other editions prior to 1730 were reprints of the second. Summer was published in 1727 and consisted of lines. A second edition, which appeared in the same year, was a reprint. Spring came out in 1728, and consisted of lines it was followed in 1729 by a reprint. Autumn appeared in 1730 as part of the first edition of the collected Seasons, and consisted of lines. The Hymn, numbering 121 lines, appeared at the same time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of Robert Burns Tun present edition of Burus'a Complete Poetical Works conforms with the other volumes in the Cambridge series Longfellow, Whittier, Browning, Holmes, and Lowell as regards mechanical features and general treatment, but its edito rial equipment is drawn entirely from the Centenary Burns edited by Messrs. W. E. Henley and T. F. Henderson. By arrangement with Messrs. T. C. E. C. Jack of Edinburgh, the publishers of that work, Messrs. Houghton, Mimin Co. Assumed the publication of the four volumes in America, and also secured the right of issuing the work in one volume in general uniformity with their Cambridge edi tions. The plan of the Centenary Burns was that of a definitive edition. The editors not only reprinted all of the known poems of Burns, but were able to collect some poems not before included. They used a careful judgment in the choice of texts, and accomymied each poem with a minute record of other readings, so that the edition is a variorum one. Not only this; they traced the origin of each poem and gave a full history of its evolution, where, as in many cases, Burns had adapted an existing song to his own use. They explained, moreover, in prefatory and other notes, the personal, historical, and local references, and they supplied a glos nary of terms as well as copious indexes. Finally, Mr. Henley summed up the editorial judgment in an essay at once critical and biographical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser For the spelling, it is that of the original texts, but with three modifications: (1) the old use of capitals is made to conform to modern practice; (2) contractions are com monly expanded (e. G. Lo. To Lord); and (3) in some few cases, when the old division of words might puzzle the reader, it is disregarded - e. G. For thy (therefore) is uniformly printed forth g. The punctuation is modernized with care not to falsify the sense. The Glossary was built up on the principle of recording all words and phrases which in modern poetry would be obsolete or markedly archaic. Later, some of this material was transferred to the Notes. The scheme of division is that all words obsolete in form will be found in the Glossary, and such words, modern in form but obsolete in sense, as are of frequent occurrence. Rarer examples of modern words in obsolete senses will be found in the Notes, with due machinery of cross references. It is hoped that without much dificulty the general reader may be able to acquaint himself with the exact meaning of any word or phrase which puzzles him. If he is annoyed by the inclusion of much that he could understand unaided, he is begged to remember that one purpose of Notes and Glossary is to furnish an approximately complete list of Spenser archaisms. The debt of the editor of any classic to his predecessors must necessarily be great. That of the [resent editor was too great to be acknowledged in detail. To indicate in the Notes and elsewhere the source of every explanation or idea would have been to load them with the names of most who have labored in this field: all that could be done was to mark direct quotations. For some of the matter here ofiered for the first time he is further more indebted to various learned colleagues and friends, who helped him to what he could not find unaided; to others he owes much in the way of criticism and direct assist ance. His thanks are particularly due to the Principal Librarian of the British Museum and to the Librarian of Harvard College for the use of those early editions of Spenser without which he could never have undertaken the most important part of his work. Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works and Letters of John Keats Although I have endeavored to draw from Keats's letters such passages as throw direct light on his poetry, there yet remains an undefined scholia in the whole body of his familiar correspondence. N o attentive reader of Keats's letters will fail to find in these unstudied, spontaneous expressions of the poet's mind a lambent light playing all over the surface of his poetry, and therefore it is not a wide departure from the scheme of this series of poets to include, in the same volume with Keats's poems, a collection also of his letters. This collection is complete, though one or two brief notes will not be found here, because already printed in the headings to poems. I have been dependent for the text mainly upon Mr. Colvin, supplemented by the minute garnering of Mr. Forman. I have to thank Mr. John Gilmer Speed for his courtesy in permitting the use of letters which be derived from the papers of his grandfather, George Keats.
