Excerpt from The Conquest of Nerves In view of the great advances that have been made in the fields of Science, Industry and Art within the last century, it is somewhat discouraging to the thoughtful physician to observe with what slowness even the most rudimentary knowledge of the human body and its functions is disseminated among otherwise enlightened peoples. Countless individuals, both men and women, attain to the highest distinction in vocations which require the keenest intelligence and the broadest cultivation, and yet remain as ignorant of the simplest bodily functions as the new-born is of its origin. Excerpt from The Conquest Yes, Your Honor, the clerk answered. He had indulged a faint hope that the judge would order the verdict to be sealed, and the jury dismissed until next morning. Then everyone might have gone home; but the whims of judges, like those of the weather, were to be borne without audible protest. Excerpt from The Healing of Nerves The graft in such cases was taken sometimes from the same animal and sometimes from another animal. In the cases of immediate transplantation the process adopted was simply that of total division and immediate suture at two levels, the intervening portion representing the graft. In cases where a period of time was allowed to elapse after the excision of a portion of nerve, the graft was procured from another animal. Excerpt from The Conquest of Fear: A Jewish Science View-Point N 0 good purpose has ever been served by disturb ing the nerves of our little ones with the emotion of fear. A child, for example, may suffer more from the fear of a fall than from the fall itself. While it is true that the early steps of a child must be watched, and its early experiences guided, yet a guardianship based on the instilling of fear into the young soul, is far more harmful than any baleful experience which the unguarded child may en counter. It is seldom that an accident befalls a child through its own lack of care or experience; the instinct for self-preservation works strongly and unconsciously from the very earliest stages of childhood. God has created His creatures with the necessary provisions for the protection of life. Many of the bumps, both actual and figurative, which the child receives, are nature's method of gently preparing the child for the greater hard ships, the heavier blows that she may ask him to encounter adequately later in life. And yet we see mothers endlessly warning their children not to jump, not to run, lest they fall; not to do this, not to do that, lest they be hurt, subduing the child with the fear of hurtful consequences, and crippling their development by barring them from necessary experiences. The child will not be hurt by countless falls, but the fear of the fall which has been bred into him, will leave an indelible and hurtful impress upon his nervous organism. It is God's intent that man be free from fear, and it is therefore that the soft babe from the day of its birth, is filled with trustfulness, and is free from fear and forebodings; but man, it seems, refuses to trust himself to higher forces, and prefers to harbor fear for himself and transmit it to his posterity. Excerpt from The Nervous Life Adapt ourselves to the demands of the ideals? Whatever society as a whole, through its lead ers, may do, it is certainly true that few of us can modify to any great extent the course of these movements in civilisation, if they can be changed at all. But everyone can at least try to understand the meaning of the stress of modern life, and determine in part his own place. He can study his own forces, estimate the dangers to be run, and the values at stake, and make provision for his own welfare. This is the personal or individual problem which everyone must in some way solve, unless life is to be lived at random. Excerpt from Our Nervous Friends: Illustrating the Mastery of Nervousness Another damaging attitude-reaction, intense in its expression, followed the unexpected death of Ethel's father. The mother, true to the ancient and honorable precedents of her family, went into a month of helplessness following the sad news. She could not attend the funeral, and for weeks the activities of the household were muffled by mourning; when she left her room, it was to wear the deepest crepe, while a half-inch of deadest black bordered the hundreds of responses which she personally sent to notes of condolence. She never spoke again of her husband without refer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Nerve-Waste Not the least of the colossal and wholly needless wastes for which our descendants will blame us heartily is the waste of nervous energy. There are two ways especially in which this matter may be viewed, one or the other of which will appeal to nearly everyone, namely, the money-equivalent and the happiness-equivalent of nerve force. The Money-Value Of Healthy Nerves. The conditions are too complex to allow the calculation, at present, of the money-value of a strong and thoroughly efficient nervous system, but it certainly is very high, almost as high as that of health, and oftentimes far higher than that of the legs or fingers about which the courts have nowadays such clear ideas.
