CSI has been heralded in many spheres of public discourse as a televisual revolution, its effects on the public unprecedented. The CSI Effect: Television, Crime, and Governance demonstrates that CSI's appeal cannot be disentangled from either its production as a televisual text or the broader discourses and practices that circulate within our social landscape. This interdisciplinary collection bridges the gap between the study of media, particularly popular culture media, and the study of crime. The contributors consider the points of intersection between these very different realms of scholarship and in so doing foster the development of a new set of theoretical languages in which the mediated spectacle of crime and criminalization can be carefully considered. This timely and groundbreaking volume is bound to intrigue both scholars and CSI enthusiasts alike.

ABSTRACT: The CSI Effect is the perceived influence of television crime show viewing on peoples' perceptions of forensic evidence and criminal trial decisions. This is a new topic of interest with very little research examining whether crime shows do indeed influence people. Study one builds on the opinion research on perceptions about whether or not the CSI Effect exists. Results from study one indicate that people who watch crime shows perceive those shows to be more accurate and educational than non crime show viewers. Study two builds upon prior research by examining the influence between crime show viewing and level of forensic evidence available in a trial on peoples' ratings of evidence and also trial decisions. Results for study two indicate a small but interesting influence between a trials level of forensic evidence and crime show viewing. People who are heavier crime show viewers do appear to expect more evidence in trial.

In recent years, crime drama programs relying on forensic evidence, such as the CSI series, have aroused suspicion within the legal community that exposure to such shows can impact jurors' decision-making ability. Arguably, exposure to such programs may create higher expectations for forensic evidence in trials and/or increase perceptions of the infallibility of such evidence. One implication of cultivation theory (Gerbner et al., 1980) is that heavier viewers of television should be more likely than lighter viewers to acquire these expectations and beliefs. Extending research on CSI effects conducted by previous scholars (Podlas, 2006; Nolan, 2006; Tyler, 2006), the current study hypothesized that exposure to crime drama would be positively related to perceptions of the likelihood of forensic evidence in four types of criminal trials, beliefs that forensic evidence is infallible, and more positive attitudes toward science, scientists, and forensic investigators. To test these predictions, 188 participants indicated their perceptions of the above variables on an online questionnaire. Respondents also provided information pertinent to overall television exposure, exposure to crime drama, and exposure to specific programs, such as CSI. The results that exposure to crime drama in general and to CSI programs specifically were significantly positively related to beliefs in the infallibility of forensic evidence. Exposure to crime drama on beliefs that forensic evidence is infallible was also significant when demographic characteristics were controlled for. The latter analysis also indicated that those who are less educated are more likely to see forensic evidence as infallible. The results showed a positive relationship between frequency of viewing CSI shows and expectations for the presence of forensic evidence in trials for theft and in 'every criminal trial'. No exposure measures were correlated with orientations toward science or forensic investigators. Overall, this study provides some support for a relationship between exposure to crime drama, particularly CSI programs, and expectations for the presentation of forensic evidence in certain criminal trials, as well as beliefs in the infallibility of such evidence. Future research should continue to examine the role of television viewing, and more importantly, CSI viewing, on juror decision making.

Scholarly studies have established that the crime television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation influences the expectations of forensic evidence by potential jurors. There is a plethora of evidence from the literature review that the CSI effect exists. However, there is no clear indication if the CSI effect influences potential male or female jurors differently. Therefore, this study attempted to show that potential female jurors are more likely to be influenced than potential male jurors. A well designed questionnaire was used to gather expectations of evidence in cases of attempted murder and attempted rape in an effort to measure the influence of CSI on male and female viewers. The study design included the expectations of various aspects of forensic evidence as the dependent variable and gender as the independent variable. A detailed statistical analysis was conducted to determine the significance of the relationship between the dependent and independent variable. The analysis indicated that among CSI viewers, there is no significant difference between male and female expectations of forensic evidence at jury trials. Further analysis of expectations of evidence in each category (such as ballistic evidence in rape, DNA evidence in rape, eyewitness evidence in rape) revealed that there was a significant difference in the expectations of evidence related to the ballistics in rape case ( p = 0.036). Expectations of evidence in this case were higher among potential female jurors compared to potential male jurors.

Two of a number of hypotheses loosely referred to as the CSI Effect suggest that the television program and its spin-offs, which wildy exaggerate and glorify forensic science, affect the public, and in turn affect trials either by (a) burdening the prosecution by creating greater expectations about forensic science than can be delivered or (b) burden the defense by creating exaggerated faith in the capabilities and reliability of the forensic sciences. Surprisingly, no published empirical research puts these hypotheses to a test. The present study did so by presenting to mock jurors a simulated trial transcript which included the testimony of a forensic scientist. The case for conviction was relatively weak, unless the expert testimony could carry the case across the threshold of reasonable doubt. In addition to reacting to the trial evidence, respondents were asked about their television viewing habits. Findings: Compared to non-CSI viewers, CSI viewers were more critical of the forensic evidence presented at the trial, finding it less believable. Regarding their verdicts, 29% of non-CSI viewers said they would convict, compared to 18% of CSI viewers (not a statistically significant difference). Forensic science viewers expressed more confidence in their verdicts than did non-viewers. Viewers of general crime program, however, did not differ significantly from their non-viewing counterparts on any of the other dependent measures, suggesting that skepticism toward the forensic science testimony was specific to those whose diet consisted of heavy doses of forensic science television programs.
