The Man Nobody Knows written by Roy Pateman and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In this book, Roy Pateman provides the most reader-friendly, up to date biography of B. Traven, an enigmatic writer whose readership spread across broader class, race, and language divides more than anyone else writing during the twentieth century. This unconventional biography discusses Traven's alternative histories, followed by an attempt to find out the major influences of this elusive man. Pateman addresses Traven's politics, his life of humanist anarchism, and discusses all of his works (in English and German), emphasizing The Death Ship, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and the "Jungle Sextet." Also included is a chronology of Traven's life, which is fuller than that found in any other study. The book ends with a modest solution to the intractable problem of who Traven really was and where he was born and raised.

Public Spectacles Of Violence written by Rielle Navitski and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-18 with Performing Arts categories.

In Public Spectacles of Violence Rielle Navitski examines the proliferation of cinematic and photographic images of criminality, bodily injury, and technological catastrophe in early twentieth-century Mexico and Brazil, which were among Latin America’s most industrialized nations and later developed two of the region’s largest film industries. Navitski analyzes a wide range of sensational cultural forms, from nonfiction films and serial cinema to illustrated police reportage, serial literature, and fan magazines, demonstrating how media spectacles of violence helped audiences make sense of the political instability, high crime rates, and social inequality that came with modernization. In both nations, sensational cinema and journalism—influenced by imported films—forged a common public sphere that reached across the racial, class, and geographic divides accentuated by economic growth and urbanization. Highlighting the human costs of modernization, these media constructed everyday experience as decidedly modern, in that it was marked by the same social ills facing industrialized countries. The legacy of sensational early twentieth-century visual culture remains felt in Mexico and Brazil today, where public displays of violence by the military, police, and organized crime are hypervisible.

Still the leading survey text on Mexican history from the pre-Columbian period to the present, this thoroughly updated sixth edition of the The Course of Mexican History introduces a new co-author, Susan Deeds. The new edition features a new emphasis on social and cultural history. It offeres new understanding of indigenous culture, including revised discussions of pre-Columbian central Mexico and the Spanish conquest of Mexico, as well as an examination of new trends in the fast-changing field of Mayan studies. Using recent scholarship and discoveries, the authors have also expanded the sections on the historical background of Spanish conquistadors, and the social, religious, and cultural history of Mexico's colonial period, with a particular emphasis on its impact on women and indigenous cultures. New research on the events and social grievances which led up to the independence movement are examined as well. Lavishly illustrated throughout, this authoritative classic is indispensable for anyone interested in Mexican history, politics, and culture.
