Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1901, Vol. 16 While the languages Of the Semitic class agree together closely, they are sharply separated from other divisions of human speech in structure and grammar, and form a natural group. Their most striking feature, perhaps, apart from their phonology and various grammatical idiosyncrasies, is the fact that they con sist entirely, or almost entirely, Of words formed Of triliteral roots. Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1899, Vol. 14 The life of Erasmus has two sides. His biographers represent him as one engaged in correspondence with the leading men of Europe, and historians are accustomed to denounce his weak ness in not taking a side. Even the most friendly hint that at any rate he was not the stuff of which martyrs are made. Such critics completely misunderstand him. We must remember that his public life was not the principal work on which he was engaged. His most arduous labours were expended on books which many of his biographers hardly mention. It is perfectly true that his name was afiixed to editions of the fathers, to which his contribution was slight but an historian of learning must remember that during the years in which he was rebuking Luther for his violence, and the monks for their ignorance, he was laying the foundation of an historical study of Christianity, helping in editions of the fathers, contributing prefaces and criticisms, -distinguishing between the false and the genuine, hoping that the gradual spread of true religion and sound learning might extinguish, by the subtle process of intellectual influence, the barbarous errors of the schoolmen and the violent half-truths of the protestants. Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1920, Vol. 35 The brotherhood was founded by Gerhard Groot at Deventer about 1380; it was inspired by the true spirit of mysticism (a feeling which found its best home in the middle ages) and by the idea of brotherhood which had wrought so many revivals in the same Burgundian lands. From the days of Gerhard onwards love of the Scriptures and of the Fathers - shown by the constant copying of manuscripts - was a special feature of its work. Another was the education of the young. Not only at Deventer but also at 's Hertogenbosch (bois-le-duc), where Erasmus was afterwards for two years, and at Stein near Gouda, had they some of their celebrated schools. So great was their success that in some places even the girls sang Latin songs in the streets. Nor were their methods dry the classics themselves were placed in the hands of their pupils, and this was specially done by Alexander Hegins at Deventer. Latin they had conquered and towards Greek they advanced. In the Netherlands and not in Italy is to be sought the true birthplace of the German Renaissance, which was not artistic, was certainly not pagan, but was from first to last practical and educational in its aims, keeping through out in close touch with theology. If on the side of mysticism it brought forth Thomas a Kempis,2 on the side of learning it brought forth Rudolph Agricola. Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1922, Vol. 37 The great Benedictine abbey of St. John the Baptist, Colchester, was founded towards the end of the eleventh century by Eudo, the son of Hubert de Ria, who was dapifer or sewer of William Rufus Its cartulary, which has been privately printed for the Roxburghe Club, has hardly any preface and only a poor index of place - names and none at all of persons. I have. Dealt in the pages of this Review 2 with the early charters of the abbey, and Dr. Armitage Robinson (then dean of West minster) has carried their critical treatment further still.3 In this paper, however, my Object is to discuss the curious narrative concerning the founder and foundation of the house, which is found, not in the cartulary nor among the muniments of the abbey, but in a single manuscript in the British Museum,4 where it is found at the end of the volume, in a hand Of the Sixteenth century Of its origin we know nothing. Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1919, Vol. 34 Dr. Levison, who more recently edited the Life, thought Dr. Wells too severe,3 but it deserves attention that on some of the vital points in which Eddi and Bede disagree, he accepts the evidence of Bede.4 Dr. Wells sought, as far as possible, to avoid the controversial features in the discussion in the present article I do not propose to Shirk them, and while in many par ticulars I am unable to follow Dr. Wells, I think his judgement errs on the side of leniency. But before coming to the more difficult questions I will take a couple of examples to illustrate Eddi's mode of treatment in regions unconnected with the crucial problems in Wilfrid's biography. Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1894, Vol. 9 II. So much by way of preface. I will now proceed, first, to examine afresh 'the key of the position secondly, to examine the passage of William of Malmesbury Of which Mr. Round considers it to -be a paraphase; and thirdly, to set forth an interpretation of both and of the relation between them. And before doing so I will, for the sake of argument, give away to Mr. Round and the Quarterly Reviewer two points which I might well contest. (a) I will grant Mr. Round that Wace had William of Malmesbury in his mind when he wrote the crucial passage (although I certainly do not regard this as proved). (b) I will concede to the Quarterly Reviewer that the word escuz in the second place where it occurs in that passage (1. 7 823) stands for literal shields (although I do not consider this either as actually proved yet) 5 Thus I come out into the lists with both hands tied behind me - my right hand out Of consideration to Mr. Round and my left hand out Of consideration to the Quarterly Reviewer. Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1887, Vol. 2: Published Quarterly If now we ask whether we may accept the picture of the empress drawn in the Secret History' for a true and accurate portrait, we can answer unhesitatingly an emphatic Yes. All the principal traits of this picture are certainly correct; and they are borne out not only by the corroborating testimony of other contemporaries, but also to a greater extent by its marked internal fidelity to life.32 There are portraits of which we feel at the first glance, without knowing the living originals.
