On the day before the trial the lawyer informed the preacher that no satisfactory evidence had been forthcoming, and that, unless something was done by daybreak, he would abandon the case. At midnight he was awakened by a frantic ringing of his door-bell. Putting his head out of the upper window, he shouted, Who's there? - The clergyman. - Well, what have you found P - I have obtained absolute proof that the deacon is innocent. - The lawyer dressed, and admitted the excited though joyous parson. Now for your evidence.-well, sir, I fell asleep, and an angel came to me, right out of Heaven, and told me the deacon was innocent. Will the angel swear to that He would if he was here. Well, get him here. Go to the clerk of the court and get a subpoena, and have that angel brought into court, and I'll do my best to clear the deacon. Of course, by scientific is meant the light of reason applied to the phenomena of life - not a demonstration by means of the microscope or balances. Perhaps philosophical would be a better word to use in describing its method, but as all true science is philosophical, and all true philosophy scientific, the writer is not disposed to insist too strongly upon the term used. Thus, the book begins by tracing the development of the concept of an afterlife through both the Old Testament and the New Testament, highlighting the changes in this doctrine over time. Later chapters abandon the examination of The Bible in order to make philosophical arguments for the existence of an afterlife. The author also examines the concept of immortality in other religions and in different periods in history, highlighting the beliefs of groups such as the Muslims and the Vikings. The book concludes with a discussion of the exclusive nature of immortality, and asks the question "Is there an afterlife for non-believers?" A reader's enjoyment of this book may depend on where they fall on the issue of an afterlife and their religious beliefs. This book was written by a Christian and seems to be aimed at a primarily Christian audience. Little of the evidence presented within is overly compelling, and it is doubtful that this text would change the mind of any non-believer.
