Excerpt from The Evolution of the Hebrew People and Their Influence on Civilization This book is the result of several years of teaching sophomores who come to college with no adequate conception of what the Bible stands for. It is designed for beginners, to help them get their bearings. It attempts to relate Bible study to the great fields of knowledge that command a modem student's attention, to show something of the fascination of Bible study pursued in this way, and to leave a positive conviction of the surpassing value of the great prophetic thoughts handed down to us. If it serves to arouse interest and stimulate further study it will have accomplished its purpose. I gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness for helpful criticism to Dr. Frank K. Sanders, to Professor Charles F. Kent, and to Mr. Henry A. Sherman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Hebrews: Their Political, Social and Religious Development and Their Contribution to World Betterment This volume seeks to make clear the important place of the Hebrew people in the history of nations and to justify the se lection of their history, as set forth in the Old Testament, as an introduction to the larger subject. It seems deplorable that so many thoughtful people of today, old and young alike, take little or no interest in the Bible or in the fascinating history which it records. The reason is largely, to be found in the fact that they failed in their formative years to become acquainted with the Bible in its true values, its attractiveness and its practical power. There seems to be a place for a compact, comprehensive outline of Biblical history and literature, simple enough in its expression and execution to hold the attention of the growing mind, and yet complete enough to meet the reasonable needs of any mind. Hebrew history and literature is a theme of great importance to the one who would really know his Bible. It can be mastered rapidly. Too much time is given, as a rule, to details of relatively slight consequence to the exclusion of those which have far reaching importance. This volume aims to indicate a proper balance of attention. It also seeks to enable the student to get rapidly to the heart of the subject and to View it frorri all essential standpoints, that of universal history, that of the development of the Hebrews, and that of permanent and personal values. The supreme defect of the religious thinking of the average man or woman of today is its narrowness. Every religiously-minded person needs to be familiar with the whole Bible and with the Bible as a whole. This knowledge need not be reserved for ministers or scholars. It mav be the possession of any thoughtful student of religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of the Hebrew People: From the Division of the Kingdom to the Fall of Jerusalem in 586 B. C While the determination to limit the present volume to the length prescribed by the wants of the busy reader has been persistently adhered to, the aim has been so to introduce him to the character, work, and essential teachings of each of the prophets that he may find in their recorded words that reality and meaning which are impossible without a clear understanding of their historical background. A detailed critical analysis of the different prophet ical books, which are the main historical sources for the various periods, has not been attempted, since the sections whose date and authorship are in question fortunately do not contain data of sufficient importance to modify materially our conception of the history; and therefore such a treatment would be aside from the purpose of the present work, which deals primarily with the life of the Hebrew people in its political, social, and religious aspects rather than with their literary products. Bertholet's 'A History of Hebrew Civilization ('Kulturgeschichte Israels') is what some scholars see as the culmination of nineteenth-century scholarship on Israelite religion. Working from general developmental theories of religion, Bertholet critically sketches Israel's development from nomadic life to their syncretism with existing Palestinian civilization.

Excerpt from A History of the Hebrew People: From the Settlement in Canaan to the Division of the Kingdom The purpose in the present work is to introduce the general as well as the technical Bible student to the essential features of the political, social, and religious life of the Hebrew people. To the candid and thought ful it is a cause for thanksgiving rather than regret that the earnest scholarship of today is carefully sifting the current conclusions concerning the teaching and history contained in the Bible. Although at first the results of this critical study seem only destructive and even alarm ing, yet a closer examination demonstrates that they are but necessary means to an end. That end is the acquisition of the whole instead of partial truth. The enveloping masses of cloud must be scattered by the sunlight and driving gales, before the outlines of the eternal mountains can be seen in their true proportions. That which dispels human traditions and misconcep tions is of inestimable value, because it discloses the real. In reconstructing the facts of Hebrew history in the light of modern biblical research, however, positive rather than negative results command attention. It is sufficient in most cases to ignore the old conceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Hebrew People, Vol. 2: Or the History and Religion of the Israelites, From the Origin of the Nation The second part of the sacred annals, which is now presented to the public, comprises the History and Religion of the Hebrew People, from the Origin of the Nation to the Time of Christ. In the prepara tion of this portion of the work, the Author has steadily kept in view the purpose which he announced in the Preface to the preceding volume; namely, to present a complete view of the history and religion of this nation in a decidedly religious manner. In the prose cution of this attempt he has encountered great, and, in some respects, unexpected, dificulty. To arrange and condense into a limited compass the Civil and religious history of a great people during seventeen centuries, would, under any circumstances, be a work sufl'iciently onerous; but this has been greatly increased by nume rous collateral subjects, of the most embarrassing charac ter, with which the history of the Jews is involved. The most important questions in theology, the most recon dite inquiries in ancient history, the most perplexing cases of Biblical criticism, the most difficult problems in early geography, - a]l obtruded themselves upon the attention of the writer; and required to be investigated, adjusted, reconciled, and wrought up into a homogeneous narrative. Beyond all the embarrassments from these 'sources, has been that occasioned by the irreligious and unscriptural tendency of the productions of cer tain authors, whose great talents, extensive learning.
