Excerpt from The French Revolution From the Age of Louis of to the Coming of Napoleon When Dickens, in the winter of 1859, essayed the little task of making a picturesque story, he requested Carlyle to lend him some books which the Sage of Chelsea had used in the production of his French Revol ution. Carlyle, making more noise in his silence-room than the rest of the world put together, replied with grim humour by despatching to Gad's Hill two cart loads of authorities. These supplied the novelist with sufficient facts and local colour to enable him to write A Tale of Two Cities. Excerpt from The French Revolution Napoleon in Literature Caricature There is no more fevered portion of the world's history than was comprehended in France between the fall of the Bastille and the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. The French Revolution was cosmopolitan. It was the protest of the ages against the growing usurpation of power. The hour developed a man. Admiration for a transcendent genius, gratitude for services to the nation, a crying need of order, made Napoleon Bonaparte emperor of the French. His downfall was due to the fact that he divorced liberty and civil equality, which were the principles of the French Revolution, and attempted the impossible in trying to make a nation free without making free the individuals who composed that nation. Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 1: Forming a Sequel to "the History of the French Revolution" I use the word here in its ordinary acceptation, and, apply ing it to subjects most diverse, will endeavour to make my meaning plain. One often observes in a child, a workman, or a statesman, something which one does not at once qualify by the name of wit, because it is devoid of brilliance, but which one calls intelligence, because the person endowed with it is able at once to grasp the meaning of what is said to him; sees, understands with half a word, if a child, what is being taught him - if a workman, the work given him to execute if a statesman, events, their causes and consequences; reads character, the proclivities of the men he has to deal with, the conduct to be expected from them, and is neither surprised nor embarrassed by what may take place, although it may cause him sorrow. This is what is understood by intelligence, and for all practical purposes this simple quality, which makes no show, is of greater utility in life than all the gifts of mind, genius excepted, which, after all, is but intelligence with the addition of brilliancy, power, breadth, and readiness. Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Emperor of the French, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Preliminary View of the French Revolution On the execution of his task, it becomes the author to be silent. He is aware it must exhibit many faults but he claims credit for having brought to the undertaking a mind disposed to do his sub ject as impartial justice as his judgment could supply. He will be found no enemy to the person of Napoleon. The term of bestill ty is ended when the battle has been won, and the foe exists no longer. His splendid personal qualities-his great military actions and poutical services to France, will not, it is hoped, be found lessened in the narrative. Unhappily, the author's task involved a duty of another kind, 'the discharge of which is due to France, to Britain, to Europe, and to the world. If the general system of Napoleon has rested upon force or fraud, it is neither the great ness of his talents, nor the success of his undertakings, that ought to stifle the voice or dazzle the eyes of him who adventures to be 'his historian. The reasons, however, are carefully summed up where the author has presumed to express a favourable or unfa vourable opinion of the distinguished person of whom these vol umes treat; so that each reader may judge of their validity for himself.
