This volume addresses the dynamics of sustainable development in the healthcare industry, covering all major aspects, including R&D, manufacturing, regulation, market access, commercialization, and general management. Healthcare markets are evolving under demographic and economic pressures. In mature markets, patients navigate complex systems with limited control on healthcare quality and outcomes, while in developing markets, patients have limited awareness, access, and ability to pay for healthcare. The industry needs to identify which business targets are genuinely attractive for major or new investments. At the same time, development of new products and services must be tackled within the context of environmental sustainability. Rather than focusing on the traditional issues of innovation, cost management, and commercial effectiveness associated with growth, the authors explore such emerging topics as: The mutations of innovation management The need to foster patient-centricity along the entire value chain of the healthcare industry and company-wide Issues related to improving healthcare access and disease management The allocation of educational resources focused on the patient to increase the effectiveness of disease management The preservation of natural resources and the environmental effect of pollution and hazards created by the handling of pharmaceutical products Issues related to the size of medical need and/or market demand The private-public partnerships necessary to address the full spectrum of public health issues, from basic patient access to care to managing global health crises The required organizational and governance evolutions for the healthcare industry to maintain profitability and sustainable growth. Featuring contributions from leading academics and industry insiders with emphasis on environmental, economically, and socially sustainable practices, the authors present a unique, multi-faceted set of perspectives on this vital and rapidly evolving field.

This book explores the ongoing transition of China’s economy by examining how its healthcare industry is growing and changing. The coronavirus pandemic has reinforced one of the authors' key points: in our complex, fragile, and interconnected societies, the production of health is a vital strategic ‘industry’. The case of China is particularly salient, because of its economic and geopolitical significance, and the scale of the healthcare challenge it has faced. Adopting a multi-level perspective, the authors examine the entrepreneurial role of the Chinese government as it seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic firms. They analyze the strategies employed to improve China’s technology and capacity for innovation, and discuss China’s strategies and policies to ensure knowledge acquisition and creation in the long-term, with particular reference to international scientific collaborations. This book is a must-read for students, researchers, and policymakers interested in the prospects and challenges posed by the growth of the Chinese healthcare industry and its global impact.

The Institute of Medicine study Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001) recommended that an interdisciplinary summit be held to further reform of health professions education in order to enhance quality and patient safety. Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality is the follow up to that summit, held in June 2002, where 150 participants across disciplines and occupations developed ideas about how to integrate a core set of competencies into health professions education. These core competencies include patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. This book recommends a mix of approaches to health education improvement, including those related to oversight processes, the training environment, research, public reporting, and leadership. Educators, administrators, and health professionals can use this book to help achieve an approach to education that better prepares clinicians to meet both the needs of patients and the requirements of a changing health care system.

Development and industrial economists and policymakers will also see the health sector from this different and innovative perspective.

Marketing in Healthcare-Related Industries captures the concepts and complexities of marketing healthcare in today’s environment. The book provides detailed conceptual and practical insights that will be of great benefit to healthcare scholars and practitioners. Topics on healthcare marketing have been carefully selected to provide wide coverage and are illustrated by mini-cases with a highly practical marketing tool kit for healthcare managers included. The healthcare sector in the 21st century face a multiplicity of challenges, which include changing disease patterns, more technology-driven health interventions, a more assertive and quality conscious clientele, as well as a rapidly growing for-profit segment of the industry. This places more responsibilities on healthcare service providers in both the public and private sectors, to deliver value-for-money services at competitive costs. To respond to the changing business environment, a carefully crafted marketing approach is needed by all players in the industry to create value and sustain the confidence of clientele and stakeholders. Praise for Marketing in Healthcare-Related Industries: "Marketing in Healthcare-Related Industries is a timely book as the healthcare industry grows more customer-focused and faces increasing pressure to deliver high-quality service at more affordable costs. This book will serve as a roadmap for practitioners as it synthesizes insights from many marketing researchers into useful and actionable advice. It should also help students easily master the application of marketing principles to the healthcare industry with tools like review questions at the end of each chapter and mini-cases to apply marketing concepts." ~ Dr. Bruce A. Huhmann, Department Chair and Professor of Marketing, Virginia Commonwealth University "Marketing In Healthcare-related Industries could not have come at a better time. Just as the epidemiological and demographic transitions have changed the cycle of planning, resource allocation, delivering, monitoring and evaluating healthcare (especially in developing countries), shrinking domestic and donor resources for health, and ambitious agendas like the Universal Health Coverage 2030 Agenda, make it imperative that healthcare providers do more with less. This book provides a clear road map to a MARKETING TRANSITION, which links healthcare and marketing in a way hitherto not so clearly outlined. The Toolkit will be a valuable tool for undergraduate and graduate students in healthcare provision, as well as health practitioners who have traditionally not been trained in this area. I commend it highly as a must-read book in this area." ~ Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe - Former Deputy Minister of Health, Ghana and currently Director & Coordinator, Global Financing & Technical Support, Joint United Nation Programme on HIV&AIDS, Geneva "A truly remarkable scholarly work of our time. An easy-to-read and insightful book that captivates the reader, whether practitioner or student." ~ Dr. Abigail Mensah, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana "This book is well-written, easy-to-understand, and very up-to-date in its approach to marketing in healthcare-related industries. It is useful for undergraduate and graduate students as well as healthcare practitioners." ~ Dr. Gouher Ahmed, Professor of Strategic Leadership & International Business, Skyline University College, UAE

For employers, health benefits have grown to be an alarmingly large component of their compensation packages. For physicians and other healthcare providers, practice management has become increasingly demanding. Each of this set's three volumes untangles the complexity, provides answers to knotty questions, and points the way toward better healthcare for all. Features include commentary, prescriptions, and insights from leaders in the healthcare industry, including physicians, attorneys, administrators, educators, and business consultants. The result: a landmark set filled with provocative analysis and practical recommendations destined to improve the delivery of healthcare. The rapid pace of change in the healthcare industry is creating turbulence for just about everyone. For consumers, affordable access to quality healthcare is an issue of primary importance. For employers, health benefits have grown to be an alarmingly large component of their compensation packages. For physicians and other healthcare providers, practice management has become increasingly demanding. Complexity is the rule, thanks to government regulations and insurer requirements, the expansion of technology in everything from diagnosis to records, and the desire of policymakers and others to have a say in how healthcare is delivered and to whom. The Business of Healthcare provides Rx to these and other challenges in three volumes: Volume 1: Practice Management Volume 2: Leading Healthcare Organizations Volume 3: Improving Systems of Care. Each volume features commentary and insights from leaders in the healthcare industry, including physicians, attorneys, administrators, educators, and business consultants. The result: a landmark set filled with provocative analysis and practical recommendations destined to improve the delivery of healthcare. The Business of Healthcare presents ideas and information that until now have been sequestered in a variety of professional journals and books, in isolation from each other. For the first time, healthcare professionals, consumers, scholars, students, and policymakers alike will have access to the same body of information about a critical sector of the economy-one that represents 15 percent of the U.S. national GDP, consumes 10 percent of federal government spending, and employs twelve million people. This three-volume set will address the current debates that are determining the future course of the industry. Volume 1: Practice Management: Physicians are beginning to realize that, in addition to providing health care, they are owners and managers of multi-million dollar enterprises. Unfortunately, most have not received formal training in the skills needed to operate such a business. In this volume, experts will present practical advice for physicians (as well as their practice managers and staff) to improve operations. Topics include: *The opportunities and challenges of solo practice. *The logistics of joining and leaving a physician practice. *Performance management in physician practices. *Creating a culture of accountability in physician practices. *Managing difficult and disruptive physicians. *Developing and promoting a physician practice. *Internet marketing of physician practices. *The potential benefits and implementation roadblocks of pay for performance. *Accounts receivable management in hospital and physician practices. *The future of the physician practice. Volume 2: Leading Healthcare Organizations: Whether running their own practice or working as a part of a larger organization, health professionals are being called upon to provide leadership—something more important than ever in health care, where some sectors of the industry are in turmoil, while others are being transformed entirely. This volume will offer insights into the changing role of leadership throughout an organization, and describe how health professionals can exert their influence to effect positive change. Topics covered include: *Perspectives on leading complex healthcare delivery systems. *Mending the gap between practicing physicians and hospital executives. *The physician's role on the hospital board, and a blueprint for success. *The impact of biotechnology advances on healthcare delivery. *The impact of informatics on healthcare delivery. *The next frontier in addressing clinical hospital supply costs. *Liability risk management: Saving money and relationships. *Pastoral medicine: The impact of pastoral care. *The role of complementary and alternative medicine in healthcare today. Volume 3: Improving Systems of Care : This volume explores the current state of health care, and it describes the critical issues that must be resolved in the short run and the long run to ensure that the industry provides the value that the public both demands and deserves. Topics include: *Quality in healthcare: concepts and practice. *Adapting proven aviation safety tools to healthcare: Improving healthcare by changing the safety culture. *Introduction to healthcare information technology. *Market dynamics and financing strategies in the development of medical technologies. *An innovative service delivery model for specialized care. *The impact of healthcare on the US economy. *Improving systems of care: a patient's perspective. *The cost of end-of-life care. *Building the bridge between business and medicine. Better, more efficient healthcare is not just possible but needed more than ever. The Business of Health Care will help lead the way toward a healthier, happier society.

An Introduction To The Us Health Care Industry written by David S. Guzick and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-13 with Medical categories.

Why does US health care have such high costs and poor outcomes? Dr. David S. Guzick offers this critique of the American health care industry and argues that it could work more effectively by rebalancing care, cost, and access. For decades, the United States has been faced with a puzzling problem: Despite spending much more money per capita on health care than any other developed nation, its population suffers from notoriously poorer health. In comparison with 10 other high-income nations, in fact, the US has the lowest life expectancy at birth, the highest rates of infant and neonatal mortality, and the most inequitable access to physicians when adjusted for need. In An Introduction to the US Health Care Industry, Dr. David S. Guzick takes an in-depth look at this troubling issue. Bringing to bear his unique background as a physician, economist, former University of Rochester medical school dean, and former president of the University of Florida Health System, Dr. Guzick shows that what we commonly refer to as the US health care "system" is actually an industry forged by a unique collection of self-interested and disjointed stakeholders. He argues that the assumptions underlying well-functioning markets do not align with health care. The resulting market imperfections, combined with entrenched industry stakeholders, have led to a significant imbalance of care, cost, and access. Using a nontechnical framework, Dr. Guzick introduces readers to the economic principles behind the function—and dysfunction—of our health care industry. He shows how the market-based approach could be expected to remedy these problems while detailing the realities of imperfections, regulations, and wealth inequality on those functions. He also analyzes how this industry developed, presenting the conceptual underpinnings of the health care industry while detailing its history and tracing the creation and entrenchment of the current federation of key stakeholders—government, insurance companies, hospitals, doctors, employers, and drug and device manufacturers. In the final section of the book, Dr. Guzick looks to the future, describing the prevention, innovation, and alternative financing models that could help to rebalance the priorities of care, cost, and access that Americans need.
